The Not So Average Wife According to Judy Brady, who wrote the essay, “Why I Want a Wife”, the list of a wife’s duties are all encompassing. Brady was a feminist who wrote this essay in 1971. While this essay is humorous, sarcastic and in some instances disturbing, it doesn’t accurately portray the duties of an average wife and mother, even in the 1970’s. The essay begins by letting us know she is a wife and mother. This gives the reader the information that the writer is experienced in both of these areas. The writer goes on to say that a male friend had recently become divorced and was looking for a wife. Brady began to think about his situation and came to the conclusion she too would like to have a wife, as she thought about the qualifications of what a husband was looking for in a wife. The rest of the essay is written from a husband’s perspective. Brady does this by using the word “I” in continual repetition to represent the mans point of view. Generally followed by the words “want a wife…” to reflect the qualifications that are needed to be his wife. Some of the qualifications included the wife working while the husband went to school, clean up any and all messes he might make, see to all his clothing and personal items needs. Not only do, the cooking, but buy the groceries, be a good cook and do all this with a smile on your face. And of course no complaining. We can’t leave out the children, all the children’s needs were to be taken care of by the wife, at home and at school. Which included for them most of the things she did for the husband.
