Two and a quarter billion dollars is a large sum of money, and if the United States were to lose this money, it would have more than likely been catastrophic and it would've brought about economic collapse in America. It was vital that in some way, the United States ensured the return of their borrowed money. At the time, many people were aware of the massive amounts of money funded in the war. In opposition to Woodrow Wilson's War Message, Senator George W. Norris talked about the money that has been spent. We have loaned many hundreds of millions of dollars to the Allies in
On the other hand, the anguished effects of WWI were still enduring in the Germanic collective memory. Many Germans perceived The Versailles Treaty, signed by the Allies in 1919, as a humiliation. The treaty contained a number of heavy impositions to Germany which were socio-economically unbearable to a once great and powerfu l nation. The amount that had to be paid to the Allies as war damage 2 made the Mark lost all its value, causing a hyperinflation so severe that the prices increased by over 100 times in just one year (Bresciani -Turroni, 1968.). The hyperinflation crisis, which was only solved in 1924, lasted enough time to ruin thousands of Germanic families, thus worsening the general feeling of rage against the treaty.
Known also as Black Tuesday, October 29th left stockholders shattered with recorded losses reaching $40 billion dollars (Kelly, n.d.). Many banks and financial institutions began collapsing which led to irretrievable, uninsured deposits and savings. Fearing further loss, people began spending less which led to a decrease in production and an increase in unemployment. As companies began to fail, the government devised the Smoot-Hawley Tariff in order to protect American businesses. The Tariff placed high taxes on imports leading to a decline in international trade.
Most scholars believe that World War II was the main reason why the Great Depression came to an end in the United States. World War II was the most destructive war that had ever occurred in the world. Thousands of Americans lost their lives, and millions of people across the world perished in the war. Warfare had changed since World War I, and the weaponry and equipment of Wold War II was more technologically advanced. When the United States entered the war iit needed to open factories to make heavy equipment, guns, ammunition and other items necessary for fighting a war.
For instance the Black Death, in the late 1930s killed an estimated 25 million people. The Great Depression also took a toll on many people, putting millions in debt. World War One took place in 1914-1919 and changed many people’s lives. People were not only killed, but lands were overthrown, and changes were made. Although there were significant amounts of tragedies, there was one that had a large amount of deaths, suffering, and innocent killings; the Holocaust.
In thirty-six days there were nearly twenty-six thousand US casualties, almost seven thousand American troops were KIA (Hama, Erksine and Williams 98). 22,000 Japanese troops were sent to battle, with a result of only five hundred survivors. The Battle of Iwo Jima and World War II in general changed many people’s lives. Many were killed, many loved ones had died and many were mentally moved. The Flag Raising at Iwo Jima taken by Joe Rosenthal helped those people who lost and helped Americans get through this war.
The Impact of Black Death & the World It Made Aaron Semkiw HIS: 103 World Civilizations I Instructor Kenneth Adderley April 9, 2011 The Impact of Black Death & the World It Made The Black Death was the world’s equivalent of an apocalyptic war, and it changed the lives of many people. It destroyed one-third of Europe’s populace, claiming somewhere around twenty million lives. And still, much of what we grasp about it is incorrect. The elements of the Plague defined in the imaginations of frightened school kids, the grotesque black bruises, the out of control state of high temperatures, and the unpleasant cessation by respiratory collapse, are just about conclusively true. But what this disease really was and how it made
Living conditions was both a physical and mental strain on the quality of life of civilians in Britain as shortly after the outbreak of war, the German navy began to use submarines, known as the U-boats. By the end of 1916, the U-boats were destroying on average 300,000 tonnes of imports a month. (Retrospective, 2008) U-boat attacks combined with the poor harvests of 1916 where placing a contributing strain on Britain’s availability to food and supplies. As needs of the nation changed, the government introduced further administrative and legislative controls. In 1918, the government introduced with the use of DORA a rationing system which ensured equal distribution of food supply to all, limiting the issue of starvation.
(How many people died in WWII altogether, n.d.) Of these deaths, 39,366 Australian military and 735 civilian deaths were accumulated, whilst in Germany there were estimates of just under 7.4 million deaths. (How Many People Died In World War 2, n.d.) The number of deaths caused by World War II alone is enough to portray the devastating effects that war has on human life. In this poem by an unnamed author it says “There are no winners in war – Everyone cries. There are no winners in war – Everyone dies.” (No winners, a war poetry, n.d.) This poem states that war is pretty much pointless because the country only loses their own men which are more important than what they are seeking. How could anyone feel like a winner knowing that 50 million soldiers died on the battlefield?
Eisenhower tells about one of the sacrifices coming by war. Because it costs a lot of money to warfare and these money used to actually kill a lot of people could be used to help those who hunger and the homeless for instance. Another consequent prevented by war is the economic situation after a war. Often there are really many buildings, factories, roadways, bridges and other places, which are completely ruined by bombs and grenades, so for the country where the war has been warfare it wills cots a lot to rebuild. Also the environmental damage with oil spills, chemical weapons and nuclear radiation damage.
