The setting is important in developing the story because is establishes the tone of the household. In the beginning the Whites seem like a normal happy family, Mr. White and Herbert are enjoying a friendly game of chess, while Mrs. White prepares dinner. Even after the monkeys paw is introduced into their lives, the tone doesn’t change. Herbert goes and strikes a few impressive chords on the piano, and even after Mr. White makes the wish and is startled by the paw moving, He and Herbert finish their pipes by the fire, which I feel is their normal routine. All seems well in the Whites household.

Mr. White took the paw out of the fire after he was warned solely for the three wishes the paw granted. These characters both determine the stories direction for example; The Whites wished for 200 pounds though their son dies because of it. If they had never wished for the money the story may have been very much different. Mr. Peters determines the path the story takes when he rescues the swan. If Mr. Peters had never done that or wished for a wife then the story may have never taken place.

I will be discussing the specific scenes in which I think Archer starts his transformation into becoming a better person (IMDb.com). Archer starts off by getting Vandy out of jail and offers to help find his family through his connections in return for half the money from selling the diamond. I believe the epiphany begins a few scenes after, around the scene where he asks Bowen to take them to the refugee camp and Vandy is reunited with his family except his son and he ‘‘drops to his knees rattling the wire with his strong hand’’ and screaming in agony (Zwick). Exactly the next scene Archer has a talk with Bowen about how this diamond is the only way Vandy can get out of Sierra Leone with his family and have a better life. He gives Bowen the facts she needs to publish her article with shows that this will be the last time he smuggles a diamond, Archer risks his life by giving the reporter this information.
