“The Monkey’s Paw” In the opening paragraph the author has wrote it with all of the important details that contribute to a successful introduction. The author mentions the setting, characters, and the mood. He gives the reader hints on some characteristics of the characters and how they might be portrayed in the story. The atmosphere in the Whites’ home before the monkey’s paw is introduced is very relaxed and content. Mr Whites and his son are playing a friendly game of chess and Mrs. Whites is knitting and observing the chess match in front of the fire. After the monkey’s paw is presented by the sergeant-major the atmosphere quickly changes into mysterious and slightly suspenseful. The Whites family is very curious about the monkey’s paw and wonders if it will actually work or the sergeant-major is making the story up. The old fakir had put the spell on the monkey’s paw because “he wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives”. He also wanted to give the opportunity for different men to each have three wishes granted from the monkey’s paw. Mr. Whites’ wish is completed at the expense of his own son. When Mr. Whites wishes for two hundred pounds he does not know how he will receive it. The sergeant-major had already warned him about using the monkey’s paw and told him that the results are very natural. The day after Mr. Whites wishes he finds out that his son was caught in machinery at work and died. The company gave them two hundred pounds for their loss. In the story the author makes the Whites family appear undeserving of misfortune because when they receive misfortune of their son dying it makes the story a lot more dramatic. With that event occurring in the story it starts to build up to the climax. The first suspenseful part in the story is when Mr. Whites uses the monkey’s paw for the first time and doesn’t know how or when his wish will come true.
