Mind of a Rampage Killer Charles Whitman from the University of Texas massacre, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold from the Columbine High School massacre, and the most recent Adam Lanza from the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. Their names are well known in the public, and by that time it is too late and too many are lost. Many want answers of why, what was going on in the mind and were there any warning signs? There is no easy answer. Although there are many scientist trying to find a link between early age development and if we can predict and help prevent rampage killers. In 1966 Charles Whitman killed 16 and injured 33 at the University of Texas. Later there were notes found written by Whitman asking for an autopsy because he knew something was wrong with his brain. After analyzing it was revealed that a nickel size abnormality close to the amygdala in his brain, which is the primary emotion center. Decades since it is still not that simple with the technologies of MRI and CT scan. The Prefrontal Cortex communicating with the amygdala puts it in over drive when there is a threat and if there is no threat the prefrontal will calm down, being that if the communication is faulty that message won’t get through. Most rampage killers come from a smaller tight knit community, but usually don’t fit with in that community. Severe depression and stress to define themselves within the community is a definite factor to a suicidal person. Most rampage killers are driven not by the urge to kill but the urge to die, and about 60 percent of rampage killers end up killing themselves. When trying to figure out what makes a rampage killer we need to look at all aspects and mainly why they are wanting to commit suicide.
