The influence media has on crime and aggression Introduction School shootings, gangs, murder, bullying. What does this have to do with the media? A debate that never seems to die is the whether or not the media has an influence on crime that is conducted all over the world. Much research and studies have been done to find an answer. Doctors Brad J. Bushman and L. Rowell Huesmann conducted a study to test whether the results of the accumulated studies on media violence and aggressive behavior are consistent with the theories that have evolved to explain the effects.
The daily news escalates the problem by showing terrorist attacks and car bombings. The government needs to impose stronger regulations on violent medias. The violence from the media influences children’s actions and behavior. Violence originates from the feeling of aggression. Mass media influences people to take their aggression out with physical violence.
It is necessary to take a closer look at whether or not violence in the media really is responsible for this development and then to examine what censorship may entail before taking such a far-reaching decision. Many concerned people, ranging from worried parents through to reputable psychologists, deplore the ever-present nature of violence in the media, claiming that this is the reason why people are increasingly prepared to commit violent acts. They argue that violence is being propagated as normal or even entertaining. Violence is in the newspapers, on the news, in film plots and in cartoons. Violence is a source of laughter in children's programs; films present it as staple fare; it is served as pseudo-information in sensation-hungry newspapers and on reality TV; and it is even glorified by some musicians in their lyrics and performances.

Ahmed 1 Sami Ahmed Professor Grannis English 112 7 December 2008 The Medias Affect on Teenagers The rise of violence and sexual activity in teenagers has placed the entertainment industry under scrutiny. Parents blame the industry for exposing their children to inappropriate content at a tender age. The industry has argued that the rating system at place should give the parents control over the content viewed by their children. Now let us find out whether the content of the media has an affect on teenagers? Or if it is the parent’s responsibility to regulate what teens watch?
Is it the frequency of violence in media which is problematic? The answer is simply, no, the problem with media violence lies not within its frequency or even with the intensity of the violence portrayed, but within the way the audience perceives it, the glamorization, sanitization, and trivialization of violence warps the audience’s perception and allows for harmful effects to the viewer. In his book The 11 Myths of Media Violence, Potter states that the context is more important than frequency because the context gives the audience the information about how the violence should be interpreted (141). Imagine a person walking across the street is unexpectedly hit by a car, if the driver gets out and tries to render aid to the victim, the audience perceives this violence as accidental and takes in the message to look both ways before crossing the street. However, if the driver had gotten out of his vehicle and explained how he intentionally ran over the victim because the victim had murdered his family, that violence, while still being horrific, would have some justification to it, sending the message that violence is a means of retribution.
Mass media manufacture crime in order to appeal to young audiences Mass media has an impact on today’s society video games, film, music, reality TV, soaps are forms of media which interest and draw in young audiences. in my essay I will explore and view several theories put forward by social theorists such as Merton’s strain theory, Mass society theory and look into the works of Mike Presdee’s carnival of crime and how that relates to young individuals and the Jeff Ferall’s Cultural criminology. I am going to focus heavily on what causes young audiences to imitate actions displayed in media sources why young people find them to be so appealing. Why they play to certain types of video games which others might find frightening and offensive what affects and control the media has on young individuals and how they interpret the story, I will then view my discussed theory’s and authors in a conclusion The first theory I will begin my essay with is Robert Merton’s advanced strain theory/ anomie. Merton stated that the strain theory was a way that individuals had developed a strain in society, certain individuals that lack the formality to gain goals or gain money and develop a particular status.
The mass media are an increasingly accessible way for people to learn what is important in the world today and what acceptable behaviour in the society is. The media which is prevalent in every aspect of our lives is the perfect instrument to install ideas in the minds of people, and the most susceptible of them all, children. The immaturity of those young children, who are rather active with action movies, will be easily influenced by the violent behaviour in the shows. This is because they may not know how to differentiate between reality and fantasy. However, media cannot be solely blamed for the world-wide increase in violence.
Unfortunately, many of today’s television programs are violent. So does TV influence kids that violence, drugs, alcohol and sex are ok? How much violence, drug references, alcohol usage, and sex references does the average American child come across? How much of this do they take in? Hundreds of studies have found that children and teenagers that watch television may: • Become “immune” or numb to the horror of violence • Gradually accept violence as a way to solve problems • Imitate the violence they observe on television; and • Identify with certain characters, victims and/or victimizers Also, Extensive viewing of television violence by children causes greater aggressiveness.
Youth Violence in Schools American InterContinental University Abstract During this paper, I will discuss youth violence in schools, and how the media has portrayed it. In addition, there is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which is the cause of many of these youths acting out. lastly, acknowledging the social groups and parents who are trying to aid with being positive in fighting those stigmas and obstacles by educating them and giving them different types of avenues to spend their time. Violence in Schools I chose Youth Violence in Schools as the topic for my post.
