Colonists were provided with even more reason to practice their religion and continue their work in America for a better, more liberated life. England's success at colonizing, what would become the United States, was due in large part to its use of charter companies. Charter companies were groups of stockholders, usually merchants and wealthy land owners, who sought personal economic gain. While the private sector financed the companies, the King provided each project with a charter conferring economic rights as well as political authority. The colonies generally did not show quick profits.
The movie begins in 1607 in England. A crew is getting ready to leave for the “ New World” bringing settlers from the Virginia Company. The ship that is taking them is the Susan Constant. The Susan Constant was actually the largest of the three Virginia Company ships. It led the 1607-1608 voyage of settlers that led to the founding of Jamestown.
The men who landed in New England wanted to escape the economic depression of England, yet were more interested in religious freedom. Maryland was even established to serve as a place for Catholic refuge. Although these Englishmen held God in high esteem, they also recognized that there must be differentiated classes of people, so that some were poor, and others were high in power and rich [Doc A]. According to John Winthrop, the men even longed for a “brotherly affection,” among the new land, and longed to create their “city upon a hill” [Doc A]. The men of New England established their new land for religion based reasons, in order to create a strong knit group of men, working together as one [Doc A].
Only around half of the one hundred plus passengers on the Mayflower survived that first winter, mostly because of diseases contracted on the voyage. The main reason the Pilgrims came was to practice religion freely and to be away from England including the restrictions on religion. [7] A Native American named Squanto taught the colonists how to catch eel and grow corn the following year (1621). His assistance was remarkable, considering that the Pilgrims were living on the site his deceased Patuxet tribe had established as a village before they were wiped out from diseases brought over by earlier traders from
Economic motives encouraged the colonization in Virginia. Organizers of The Virginia Company of London wanted to expand trade and to obtain a wider market for English goods. They hoped for great financial profit, whereas freedom from religious persecution drove the Pilgrims to leave England and settle in Holland. However, when they realized that their children were being too influenced by the Dutch lifestyle and were starting to lose their Enlgish culture, they decided to leave for the New World, encouraged by news from the Virginia settlement. Further more, the relations with the Native American
Looking back over history it can be seen how that faithfulness to the mission of God produces fruit that can change the future. As Johnson began to use his gifts that God had given him in the ministry he found himself presented with another opportunity that he would readily accept. In 1809 Johnson was presented with the opportunity to become chaplain of South Carolina College. This appointment by god opened the door to starting a church in Columbia. According to Caner this presented Johnson with financial hardship as he had a wife and children that were dependent on him for food and shelter.
His career in exploration started when he was very young. As a teenager he traveled the seas and eventually made Portugal his base. Columbus came to believe that the East Indies (present day Indonesia and surrounding islands) could be reached by sailing west through the Atlantic Ocean. He appealed to the kings of Portugal, France and England to finance a westward trip to the Indies, but all denied his request. After ten years of monumental efforts but fruitless results, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain agreed to finance Columbus in the hopes of acquiring great wealth.
They were part of a religious group called the “Puritans” because they wanted to purify the Anglican Church of England from all Roman Catholic practices. Puritans had a dream to adopt reforms in order to purify their nation’s official church. They eventually decided they could best worship God by separating from the Church of England and became known as “Separatists.” The Pilgrims, as part of the Separatists, separated from the Church of England and formed their own congregation. King James I did not like the Puritan Separatists, so they moved to Holland because they feared for their lives. However, life in Holland was not perfect.

American Culture Project (Period 1) Background Information- During the year 1491- 1607 the age of exploration was taking a turn into colonization for the Spaniards as Christopher Columbus landed on Hispaniola where he made the first settlement of the Americas. His voyage’s would end up being unfunded from the Spanish royalties by 1504 since he didn’t find the gold he was looking for. After a few years past from Columbus’s first 2 voyages to the New World Amerigo Vespucci a merchant went down south close to the coasts of Brazil where he concluded that they had hit a new continent. Over the years Spain would send troops to the newly found continent to conquer and spread Christianity, gain glory, and find riches. Leading the Spaniards to
