Erica Taveras Mr. Monaghan Honors U.S. History 1 15 May 2012 The Man on Horseback: Theodore Roosevelt Over the past 200 years, the United States has experienced many different types of presidents. Some were great presidents, and others were not as great. Taking on the role of presidency is no easy matter. An entire nation would be depending on you, even when you sleep. Working twenty four hours a day and putting a maximum amount of determination and work, in order to satisfy the needs of the people, and keeping everything in peace and harmony. Theodore Roosevelt took on this role in an exceptional and remarkable manner. He was one of the uttermost presidents of the twentieth century, and is often remembered as one of the greatest presidents in America’s history. Roosevelt’s surprisingly vigorous persona and striking courage pushed the United States throughout the early twentieth century. Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 27, 1858, one of the four children of Theodore Roosevelt Sr. Known as "Teedie"--later "Teddy"--he was frail and sickly as a boy and as a teenager followed a program of gymnastics and weightlifting to build up his strength (“Theodore Roosevelt.biography”). His father encouraged him in participating in physical activities, which led to his belief in people overcoming things by using their power and actions. However, his illnesses led him to be educated by his aunt and other private tutors until 1876. He became interested in animals and natural science at a young age. In 1876, he started attending Harvard College, where he developed political and historical interests. In 1882, after dropping out of Columbia University Law School, was elected in the New York State Assembly, and served for three terms.
