The Lovely Bones By Alice Sebold “The Lovely Bones” is the story about the worst thing that a family could face. Susie Salmon is a fourteen year old girl who lives in Pennsylvania during the 1970’s. Susie is murdered on December 6, 1973. When Susie is first introduced in the book, she is already in heaven. There she tells the story of her murder. Susie’s murderer was a man from her neighborhood. On that December day, Susie decided to take a short cut through the cornfield from her school. There she saw Mr. Harvey only six feet away from her. He showed Susie a hide-out he has built in the cornfield. He bent down and opened a wooden door. In the ground, he has dug out the size of a small room with benched and shelves dug out of the wall. After leading Susie inside, Mr. Harvey began to rape her. Pulling off her clothes and kissing her. Susie heard her mother calling for her. She could not move. Mr. Harvey took out his knife. He looked at Susie and grinned. “Tell me you love me,” he said. Susie did, but he killed her anyway. A few weeks after her death, Susie watches life continuing without her, her school friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her family hoping that she’ll be found, and her killer trying to cover his tracks. Susie sees her parents’ marriage fall apart by the loss, her younger sister, Lindsey trying to stay strong and her little brother, Buckley trying to figure out that she was gone. Often, from heaven, Susie still watches her
