The Jungle by Upton Sinclair tells the story of a Lithuanian family struggling to stay alive in central Chicago, known as Packingtown during the early 1900s. Since their migration to America, they had been faced with the challenges of adapting to the American style of living and trying to find jobs to support themselves. They endured harsh winters and sweltering summers, which caused many disappointments and tragedies, such as, having no money, lost jobs, injuries, and sickness. The family fought through many difficult ups and downs, but they always tried to stick together. The man of the household, Jurgis Rudkus, did not want his wife Ona to work in the factories, but because of their financial struggle she and the children went out to get jobs, such as, selling newspapers and working in the canning industry. To be successful immigrants they must assimilate into their new society by knowing how speak the language, finding the right jobs, and working with the right people. Jurgis and his family did not assimilate well into this new society resulting miscommunication because of language barrier, bad health and unsafe working conditions, and being taken advantage of. Jurgis was searching for the American dream, “freedom of life, love, and joy”, but was left empty handed. Jurgis was a hard working man. He would always say to Ona, “Leave it to me; leave it to me. I will earn more money-I will work harder (Sinclair 17)”. He did work hard, but it was not enough to keep his wife and child alive. Upon their arrive in the big city they ran into a Lithuanian friend named Jokubas Szedvilas. He brought them to a boardinghouse under a widow named Mrs. Jukniene. “Most immigrants stayed in the shabbiest tenements only until they could afford better housing (Boyer 572)”.
