“My life now depended upon my finding work, and I was so anxious that I accepted the first offer, a job as a porter in a clothing store selling cheap goods to Negroes on credit.” (179) Another evident hunger in Richard was his hunger for money. Without his income, his family could often not make the rent and they would have to move. This put enormous amounts of pressure on Richard to be able to get enough money for the rent. “’I’ve no money. I’m going to work.’”(176) In this quote, Richard shows how desperate yet determined he is for money to help his family and survive.
Trying to find a job in the big city, was a lot harder than he ever expected. He tried to impress potential employers by coming early, but even by being the most diligent person, he couldn't get hired without any address. Before knowing it, he gets kicked out by the landlord, who was requiring money he didn't have. - This was when he officially became a homeless. Later in the story, Link gets a friend called “Ginger”, who is a rough sleeper too.
Throughout ‘Of Mice And Men’ Steinbeck portrays George as a resentful father figure to Lennie; however this task proves to be a lot of work, as Lennie is rather an annoyance towards George due to his lack of intelligence and knowledge of the world. Consequently this means George has to focus upon keeping Lennie safe and protected and unfortunately his own ‘American Dream’ is temporarily abandoned. When starting at the ranch George is judged for travelling around with Lennie, his boss assumed he was using Lennie for labour purposes and taking his money; ‘Funny how you an’ him string along together.’ Similarly the workers also feel George is going to a lot of effort to keep someone who is ‘slow’, like Lennie, with him when it would be easier to travel alone. The adjective ‘funny’ suggests the situation is unusual and no one has ever bothered to do the same, nor have they ever seen anything like it before. However earlier in the novel George describes him and Lennie as the, ‘loneliest guys in the world’ implying that he doesn’t feel the same way.
Walter Lee is unhappy with his job, his salary, and feels like there is so much more he could do if only someone would give him a chance. He wants to be successful and live the American dream, but feels as though no one will believe in him. This also makes him feel alienated from his family, because they don’t even believe in him. He just wants to be taken seriously but nobody does. This also undermines his masculinity, because the rest of the adults in his family which are all women don’t take
It’s always been an issue for some people to accept immigrants in this county regardless of their status. For instance, they think that immigrants are here to take their jobs. Therefore when immigrants finally find a job, they have to fight in order to survive. To illustrate this, they all feel heartbroken, miserable and lonely because they have no clue when all of their situations will be resolved, for that reason, it’s never a good idea to come here illegally because coming here without any type of right document can lead to major problem in any body’s life. Eventually, anybody who take that risk to support their families should be rewarded for that big sacrifice, they have to go through in the United
My great grandfather use to tell me stories of how September 1, 1939, changed his life. He was forced out of his home with his three children and wife to survive World War II. He has said there were troubled times then, but somehow by the grace of god, and the need for better, they had continued on their long journey for a better life. After WWII, over 6 million people had died, many being family and friends and co-workers, he was devastated. The businesses and towns were destroyed, and Poland was economically devastated.
Male Dominant Society The book Bread Givers has a lot of obvious themes throughout it; however I think the theme of males being seen as more important and more powerful than women stands out the most. As the daughters Bessie, Mashah, Fania, and Sara grow up in a poor household, they are burdened with the responsibility of making money to support each other and their parents. They are responsible for making money for food, necessities, and also for paying rent. Although their father doesn’t work, he put all of the pressure on his daughters especially during the time that they couldn’t find jobs and continued to demand to receive their wages. Their father spent most of his time praying and studying the Torah and wanted to find his daughters
The main conflicts in this film are both internal and external. The conflicts that are internal is the fact that every on in the Younger family thinks that money will buy them happiness, and they all constantly disagree with each other about what they should do with the money. Walter wants the money so that he can prove that he is capable of making a future for his family. By doing well in business Walter thinks that he can buy his family happiness. His internal conflict comes into play because he has forgot about his husband responsibilities that he has toward his family by creating this infatuation with opening the liquor store with his friends.
Many reasons for the gender gap in U.S. are because of the negative stereotypes about how women work. For example many men use the excuse that women don’t have flexible work schedule and have to leave their job early to tend to their children. Who’s going to do the work if a woman is in control? In some case this may be true, but men don’t leave their work when the kids are sick, women do. This encourages society to believe that women are not trusted enough to be to work on time or constantly ask for time off.
Some of them will end up in bad communities/societies, where they ruin/destroy their future. Their parents sacrificed everything to make sure that their children will have a future, but the children do not feel the same way. They will grow up like an orphan and wondering why their parents left them behind. The parents immigrated to America for their children sake, because they wanted to make sure that their children will have a future, where they can live in peace, yet the children sees it in a whole other way. The American government does not want illegal immigrant in their country and therefor they use billions of dollars every year to reduce the number of illegal immigrants.
