The Invention of Basketball What do you think of when you hear the word, “basketball”? Do you see an orange sphere with black lines, surrounded by leather? While this is the most common preconceived notion, the game of basketball has evolved tremendously over the years, drastically altering its impact in the sports world. From High school basketball to NCAA to NBA and WNBA, basketball players around the world possess a vast array of extraordinary skills that can be both unbelievable to watch and a source of pure entertainment. Overall, the degree to which basketball has advanced over the years is amazing and has become one of the major sports all over the world. The game of basketball was first invented in 1891 by Dr. James A. Naismith (Laughead). While holding the position as a physical education instructor at a YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith was given the challenge of developing a game that could be played inside during the winter months. Additionally, he wanted to create a game that required a certain degree of skill rather than one that relied primarily on strength. After only two weeks of thinking, he came up with the basic concepts that would later define the rules of basketball. First and foremost, he wanted to create a game that would discourage tackling and not allow players to run with the ball, like in football. Instead it would be a game where the players would be made to pass and the ball would have to be lofted into the air. Hence, the game of basketball started with two peach baskets (positioned on either sides of the “playing field”), a soccer ball and 13 rules (Laughead). He divided his class of 18 into 2 teams of 9 players each and began to teach them about the new game he had invented (Bellis).
