“How can I make this world a better place?” At first thought, it is typical to envision projects such as building homes in underdeveloped communities. Although acts of contribution like these are life-changing, today’s generation often forgets about those who evolved us into who we are today. To combat this dilemma, I have been visiting a local nursing home for 4 years, and it has been the most uplifting experience a young person can be part of. When I became involved with volunteerism in my freshman year, I felt alone. Not many kids in my high school wanted to visit seniors in a nursing home. Students felt like it was a waste of time, or they were intimidated by the interactions that could occur. If a student did not have a family member in a nursing home, it was even harder to persuade them that visiting the elderly would benefit not only the residents, but also the student. Without others as support, I felt like I would never get a significant amount of kids to visit our local nursing home. However, this outlook changed once I decided that enough was enough. I have been President of the Young Kasamas since my sophomore year in 2015. I had volunteered at Crestwood Nursing Home throughout my freshman year and I loved every moment of it. To an even greater surprise, the residents were treated to lunch at the school’s student-operated restaurant. Students and teachers gathered for lunch with the residents to hear stories from many years ago, learning about the lives of previous generations.
