The Importance of Setting Goals

Discuss the important of setting goals and describe your most important long term goal for university. Goals are an important part of all facets of life, be it personal goals relating to family or study, or business goals, relating to job title, promotion or desired income. Setting realistic goals is important as it allows me to control the direction of my life as well as giving my life a purpose. As I have a plan and a vision of where I wish to go and where I see myself in the future, I am motivated to put steps in place to reach that destination. Setting goals also helps me to effectively and efficiently allocate resources and manage time constraints. In working towards achieving goals, it helps to define my priorities. As I have a plan of what I wish to achieve, it is expected that I will switch off the television, turn off Facebook and get stuck in to accomplishing that task. Goals also help to break down large, seemingly impossible tasks into smaller tasks to make them achievable. Three to four years of study to complete a university degree seems like an extremely daunting task, but by breaking down the degree into 13 week units, and aiming to complete each week and unit successfully allows me to chip away at that degree and make it more attainable. Goal setting allows me to track and monitor my own personal progress. If my short term goals are being achieved in a timely manner, it motivates me to continue working toward my long term goal. If I am not meeting expectations, I need to sit down, and reconsider my time management, as well as reassess if my goals are attainable. In this regard, setting goals holds me accountable for my own outcomes, whether that be success or failure.
