Collins (2001) and his research team contrasts the good-to-great companies with a carefully select set of comparison companies that did not make the leap from good to great. “Good is the enemy of great” (Collins, 2001, p. 1). This quote assesses and makes the assumption that because a company, school, or even a government is good, they never make the transition to greatness. Acquiring the astigmatism of good are enough and sometimes this causes companies, and other individuals to become complacent, never venturing to further their status to greatness. Collins (2001) assesses that the “vast majority of companies never become great because the vast majority become quite good, and that is their main problem” (p. 3).
He is so blinded by his luxurious possessions that he does not see that money cannot buy love or happiness. The author argues that the common, and false, perception of the American Dream is that wealth, happiness, and a trouble-free life go hand-in-hand. However, through diction, foreshadowing, and irony, Fitzgerald demonstrates how a dream can become corrupted by one’s focus on acquiring wealth, power, and love. From the very beginning of the novel, Fitzgerald creates the illusion in Gatsby’s mind that wealth automatically generates happiness. When Fitzgerald envisions, “however glorious might be his future… he was at present a penniless young man without a past…” (149).
When you compare the two men’s principles to each other, neither seems as if they would be very successful. Machiavelli using past Kings leadership skills and Lao Tzu using methods based on the Tao means they have very different views on just about everything. Having to choose one, Machiavelli’s seem more realistic and sensible. They both mention their views on money, war, and how to control their people; mercy or cruelty. Machiavelli said repeatedly that the leader should not worry about being called a ‘miser’, which is a person who hoards wealth and spends as little money as possible, or a greedy person, because of the fact that they are saving the money for war themselves so they do not have to collect excessive taxes from their people.
The advantage she sees in being “only a daughter” would be that she had her destiny in finding a husband. 4. Why does her father think she has wasted her education? What is her reaction to his opinion? d. Her father believed in her education because he believed she would actually find a husband.
In a day without such work the river of money in the country withers into a stream. The same can be said for times when people cannot buy goods. When goods are purchased, the money is traded back and forth and dispersed across the country to create the economy. When nothing is being purchased, the laborers are not being payed and the flow of money stops there. This would come to no one's benefit and would damage an already unstable country.
He did not truly make any friends through his wealth, and his money is no use to him now that he is dead. Gatsby dies alone with no one to think of him and his wealth did not improve his memory at all. Nick says: “I tried to think about Gatsby then for a moment, but he was already too far away, and I could only remember, without resentment, that Daisy hadn’t sent a message or a flower”(174). Gatsby does everything he could think of to get Daisy, his quest for wealth being intertwined with his love for her, but in the end his money did not make the difference. He is still left unfulfilled, his money unable to substantiate his love for Daisy.
The Great Gatsby is centered around a character trying to reach his american dream by evolving his lower class title into a social elite. In the novel, Jay Gatsby becomes rich, however, is still not accepted by the high social classes. Fitzgerald uses the character of Gatsby to convey the inability to break through classes. Gatsby’s American Dream is to be accepted by those around him as something more than just new money. His dream is never really achieved.
Why college education is important to me? I strongly believe one of the most critical ways of reaching your dreams and goals in life are to have a college education. Without a college education you may find it extremely difficult to have a good enough career that will provide you and your family with enough money to do the extra things in life that are pleasurable and exciting. I also strongly believe that having a college education will teach my children that continuing their education beyond high school equals success for them in the future. Without a college education one cannot reach their full potential thus making them unable to achieve their highest and most sought after dreams and goals.
The students graduated and became social workers. The faculty member said “They knew that school would be their saving grace, that knowledge was the only thing that couldn’t be snatched.” In other way by them to finish school that would be the only thing they will have for them to save them from poverty and no one would take it away, because now they will have a degree they have earned on their own; have better jobs and be financially stable. These students are trying to overcome poverty by getting an education. Homelessness among college students is a big problem. Not a lot of people are aware of it.
Attending College vs. Not Attending College Ashley Jarolim COM/170 April 9, 2012 Joyce Cottonham “Attending College vs. Not Attending College” Some people decide that college is a great asset for their future careers. Others, on the other hand belief that good honest hard work will give them all the satisfaction they need. The disadvantages of not attending college far outweigh the advantages of getting an education. Many people often consider which is the best choice for them after graduating from high school, should they go to college or not? Whichever choice that anyone makes should always be a well thought out decision.
