The Great Gatsby: Is Gatsby Truly Great? In his novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald creates Gatsby as a character who becomes great. He starts off as an ordinary, lower-class citizen, but Gatsby dreams of becoming wealthy. After meeting Daisy, he has a reason to strive to become better. Throughout the book, Gatsby gains the title of truly being great because he’s in the military, he never stops loving Daisy, and he makes a life for himself. Gatsby is truly great because he went into the military. Gatsby and Nick both served as officers in the war and he told Nick "Then the war came ... it was a great relief, and I tried very hard to die ... " (66). Deep inside, Gatsby knew he would never be good enough for Daisy, and death would've been an easy way out. However, Gatsby survives the war, and comes out with honors and medals. Even during the war, Gatsby demonstrates his greatness by always being an honorable soldier. Upon his return to America, he concentrates on winning Daisy back. This shows Gatsby’s greatness because even through his entire struggle, he fights for his country and keeps his goals in mind. Gatsby is a truly great person for serving in the military because that is a huge sacrifice. After Gatsby was introduced to Daisy, she was the only thing that mattered to him. Gatsby came from a poor background. He worked his whole life to become rich. He did many jobs, served in the military, and still remained true to not only his dream, but his true character as well. This shows that Gatsby is great because it requires a lot of work and self discipline in order to achieve ones dreams. Even when he’s rich, Gatsby would still offer to help Nick, or care for Daisy.
