Background Who is this “Mr. Gatsby”? Some claim him to be a “nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Welham’s”(Fitzgerald 32) others say he was a “German spy during the war”(Fitzgerald 44) and more claim “he told me he was an oxford man”(Fitzgerald 49). He is a young man with a “rare smile”(Fitzgerald 48). Evidence and Analysis 1. Mr. Gatsby’s house is “a colossal affair by any standards-it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy” (Fitzgerald 5). Mr. Gatsby feels the need to fit in and be as luxurious if not more as his comrades. He wants people to think he is consumed with money and has traveled the world. 2. His neighbor also recalled during the party that his “eyes fell on Gatsby, standing alone on the marble steps and looking from one group to another with approving eyes” (Fitzgerald 50). This shows that Gatsby cared about the people there mingling more then him having a good time. It was more of a job then pleasure, like he was doing something right and everything was going to according to his plan. 5. “ I wondered if the fact that he was not drinking helped to set him off from his guests”(Fitzgerald 50). This shows again that this was more business then pleasure to Gatsby. He couldn’t even relax and have a drink at his own party. Conclusion Mr. Gatsby is an inside guy for the government. He tells people different things about his past because it gives off a rough, dangerous feeling that would throw people off from thinking he would be working to do good. At the same time he wants people to feel close to him by sharing his things and always having company proving he has nothing to hide.
