The Girl with Bangs Conflicts In the story, “The Girl with Bangs,” by Zadie Smith, the protagonist falls in love with another girl, whose name is Charlotte Greaves. Little does the narrator knows, Charlotte is having an affair with guy with a French accent by the name of Maurice, and another guy whose name is unknown. The narrator knows very much about Charlotte. The narrator’s goal is to have mutual feelings with Charlotte. Unfortunately, the narrator could not reach this goal due to Charlotte’s promiscuity. In the story, “The Girl with Bangs,” by Zadie Smith, the protagonist (which is the narrator) struggles with problems with other characters, herself, and society. The narrator struggles with problems with other characters. Maurice, who is the guy that Charlotte was once having an affair with, was one of the characters who are blocking the narrator from reaching her goal. Charlotte also is having an affair with an unnamed character that is later revealed towards the end of the story. Maurice left to take a TV job in Thailand as a newscaster, but Charlotte holds a promise that she would wait for him (Smith 237-238). The narrator didn’t care what other thought about the type of person Charlotte is. It seemed that other classmates didn’t favor Charlotte but the narrator cared nothing about that. For example, finals were coming up for Charlotte went to the study room. The study room was meant for everyone but since Charlotte had moved in, all others had gradually moved out (238). Society also used the narrator as being the “problem solver” for Charlotte. For example, a German graduate regularly picked up things that Charlotte had dropped but she finally got to him (238-239). People would come up to the narrator in the bar and say “Look, Charlotte did X. Could you please, for the love of God, stop Charlotte doing X, please?”
