| The Five Needs of Surviving | | | Shanise Bradley | Whatcom Community College | | In order to survive as a human being there are five “needs” that we have to fulfill. Abraham Maslow developed the five hierarchy needs. The five needs are listed in order of importance because you cannot fulfill one unless you are satisfied with the more important need that places below it. The first need is physical. This involves basic survival needs such as eating, sleeping and breathing. It is understandable that this is the first need considering you cannot function without air to breathe with or water and food to give you strength and energy. Physical needs also include reproduction in order to keep the human race ongoing. To keep the human race alive, we have to learn how to detect dangerous situations. That is why the second need of survival is safety. If we are in a situation that we consider dangerous, our bodies automatically go in a fight or flight mode. Fear is a natural feeling and it helps us humans to either fight for our life or run for it. The third in line is social needs, which is the love and sense of belonging to other loved ones. Having the love and support of a family is so important for survival. As a baby you are helpless and do not understand or have the skills of obtaining any of your own needs. A family provides for you and teaches you how to do the same for yourself as well as the family you will have. Creating relationships with people other than your family is important too because it helps you understand other people and their different way of life. Being social helps create a better knowledge of the world which is how you decide traits and things that you love and hate. Step four is esteem needs which is the need to feel valuable to the world.
