The Ehrengraf Defense By Lawrence Block Dorothy Culhane has a problem. Her son is on trial for murder and her best option to save him is a lawyer by the name of Martin Ehrengraf, a man who is known for never losing a case. But how is this possible? What is it about this man that allows him to never lose? It’s strange enough that he operates on a contingency basis, but to never lose seems unfathomable, especially for murder cases. Mr. Ehrengraf is a man of small stature, but gives off a cold and calculating aura. Always well dressed, and according to him, well fed, he enjoys the chaos around him, so long as his person is kept in order. His suits are always in an immaculate “perfectly tailored” state. Despite his personal appearance his office is a mess. His desk is in a state of disarray. Yet he himself is a calm and collected individual. When he smiles, you can easily see it’s a cold and calculated smile, where even though his lips are smiling… his eyes say something else.…show more content…
That is an amazing feat in and of itself. To hire him as a lawyer, you must agree to his cost. It’s pretty high, but if he doesn’t get you off, you don’t have to pay him anything. He’s very upfront on this point, even though it seems strange. If you are a person who can read people you might have been saved the experience that Mrs. Culhane went through. After clearing his son’s name of the crime, she tried to offer him less money, which is something you just don’t do when dealing with Mr. Ehrengraf. This is when you learn about the real side of Mr. Ehrengraf, the man who you do not cross. After she tries to explain that to him her reasoning, she is told a “story” of how he was able to get her son off. The truth was too much for her, and terrified her to her core. He suggested he had a contingency to deal with her son should she try to renege on the
