Flores Jonas Louis Dayandante CHAPTER 1 The Problem and its Setting In the world of cellphone texting, where individuals can send thoughts and updates to anyone, regardless of the location, many of our traditional grammar have been forgotten in favor of speed and instant gratification. According to Ocean Malandra, the habit of using poor grammar may lead to a growing number of students who cannot pass the Basic English subject. Since the early 90’s cellphone texting has been known as one of the most prominent forms of communication in the world. Texting due to its simplicity, is very popular, anyone with a cellphone can do it. It helps us stay communicated with many people throughout the day. This research is being made of the modernization of the students in Sta. Elena High School, they are the ones called “Jejemonz.” They are texting a simplified or code-like message to anyone. Little they know that texting a shrtned or cod3lik3 message like this can affect a big part of spelling and grammar abilities that most students can’t pass an English Grammar Exam. The purpose of this research is to determine the positive and negative effects of cellphone texting to the spelling ability of the students in Sta. Elena High School. The researchers would like to know if text messaging can affect the spelling ability of Second Year High School students of Sta. Elena High School in Marikina City School Year 2012-2013. B.
