Pros and cons of Substance Abuse Dawn Provance HMSV: 220 January 1, 2013 There are many pros and cons of substance abuse, alcoholism and drug abuse can be considered a brain disease, many people don’t realize that addiction is a disease that affects the brain, stopping substance abuse is not just a power of willpower. When people get addicted to drugs or alcohol they can have a lot of serious problems. Overtime drugs and alcohol can cause changes to the brain and can affect a person’s self-control. This can make it hard to make good decisions about are self. Addiction can be like diabetes or asthma, if you have one of these dieses it can’t be cured, you would have to learn how to handle it so it does not cause problems.
Amphetamines are used to treat a variety of medical issues but like cocaine, illicit drug use in the 60s caused the federal government to become concerned about dependency and illegal activities. Parents, guardians, and siblings should be encouraged to look out for each other, so as to avoid situations, where teenagers and adolescents try to seek solace in alcohol. School and Peer Influences It is well known that during adolescence and puberty, youths usually strive to gain acceptance from their peers. It is through the need to gain this acceptance that some teenagers start consuming alcohol. Teenagers and adolescents often want to belong to certain groups whose behaviors and values are similar. If drinking alcohol is a normal activity for a given peer group, then a teenager who associates himself or herself with such a group is more likely of becoming an underage drinker.
Drug addiction is a major part of today’s society. Not only does it affect the human body in many different ways it also affects the mouth in various ways. There is evidence saying marijuana is very harmful to the body and there is also research that says it only harms the lungs, as done with the inhalation of any kind of smoke.
I think this is good because it helps people to understand how much teens really drink. The author gave a lot of statistics that are eye opening and could potentially be a good thing to include in my paper. The author says that alcohol is consumed more by teens that tobacco or illegal drugs are consumed by teens. This article stresses the fact that underage drinking is a serious problem that people always over look. That is why I would use this source, people need to know how much of a problem underage drinking is and we need to make an effort to get it under control.
Although legally available, prescription drugs can be extremely addictive and deadly. The long-term effects of prescription drug abuse, is no longer “The Hidden Epidemic”. The Physiological aspect is another factor of addiction a user goes through. Levinthal , 2012) It is very noticeable to see the physiological toll the body has when it is addicted to a certain type of drug. The body can experience chills and fevers, hypertension, seizures, anxiety and even more serious, chemical imbalances. Drug Use Did you know that on average males between the age of 12 and 19 are most likely to become addicted to drugs? For the most part drug users come from a background where one or even both parents are users. The statistics of drug use and addiction are sad, but just ever growing. This is a topic that will continue to be a growing problem. We need to remember though, we can do something about it, and we can help prevent it.
