Cold Sassy Tree By Olive Ann burns The book Cold Sassy Tree, by Olive Ann Burns, takes place in Cold Sassy, Georgia. The protagonists are Rucker Blackslee and a young man that goes by the name of Will Tweedy. Rucker Blakeslee and his new bride, Miss Love Simpson, attempt to live happily and ignore the town's and the Blackslee family's general condemnation of their union. Will struggles to grow up and maintain his integrity with all the drama that is happening. This novel is about an old man growing young because after his wife Mattie Lou Blakeslee passed away he decided to move on and make Miss Love Simpson his new bride.
Harriet and Calvin got married in 1836. The work of the Underground Railroad touched both Harriet and Calvin. The couple hid slaves in their home until they moved to Maine when Calvin got a job at Bowdoin College in 1850. Within two year’s Harriet had three children and, the couple worried financially as Calvin’s salary decreased. To earn some extra money Harriet wrote for local magazines and papers.
The book Phoenix Rising by Karen Hesse is one of the best books I have read in school. When I began reading it I did not understand the title, but as I read more I began to understand. Nyle is a young who cannot accept losses. Except when the accident in Cookshire took place she had to learn how to let go. Nyle’s Grandma allowed two evacuees, a mother and her very sick son, to settle in her house until the boy got better.
Deaf Like Me Book Review Deaf Like Me follows the lives of two parents, Thomas and Louise Spradley, and the struggles they encounter with their family. Thomas and Louise live an average life and have a son named Bruce, who one summer becomes ill with German measles, or rubella. The real story begins though when a few days prior to Bruce becoming sick Louise learns that she is pregnant. This is where the real story starts, as the doctor informs Thomas and Louise that if she contracted rubella while pregnant it may lead to birth defects in the baby, so for the next nine months Thomas and Louise worry about what is to become of their new baby. When the baby is born they name her Lynn, at first sight Lynn appears to be a perfectly normal and healthy baby, there are no signs that any sort of deformities either physical or mental are present.
Baker's book is a great memoir. He tells the story of his childhood growing up in the Depression, which takes him from a rural Virginia shack without electricity or running water to stark poverty in Belleville, New Jersey; and Baltimore, where his widowed mother must rely on the charity of family members to feed the family. Baker, born in 1925, frames the story with his 84-year-old mother's lapse into dementia at a nursing home, which has untethered her from the present and drops her into random points in her life. One day he comes to see her and is met with the question "where's Russell?" In her mind, she'd become a young mother again with a three-year-old boy and a younger sister.
Mary Shelley was born in London in 1797 to intelligent parents. When Mary Shelley was 16 years old she decided to elope with a man named Percy Shelley who was a romantic poet. After a few years death had began to storm into her life, first she had a few miscarriages. Her only living child had also died and so did her half sister, and lastly Percy's first wife had died to suicide. When she went to vacation at Lord Byron's house, she and her colleagues would talk about different scientific things and the possiblitiy of reanimating the dead.

Andy Warhol’s father (Ondrej) was a construction worker and his mother (Julia) was an embroiderer. They were both Slovakian immigrants and Bytazine Catholics who attended church regularly. Andy Warhol was bedridden for several months at 8 years of age after he contracted a potentially fatal disease known as Chorea. While Warhol was sick in bed, his mother (a very skillful artist) gave him some of his first drawing lessons.
Introduction to Simone de Beauvoir’s ‘The Second Sex’ In 1946, Simone de Beauvoir began to outline what she thought would be an autobiographical essay explaining why, when she had tried to define herself, the first sentence that came to mind was “I am a woman.” That October, my maiden aunt, Beauvoir’s contemporary, came to visit me in the hospital nursery. I was a day old, and she found a little tag on my bassinet that announced, “It’s a Girl!” In the next bassinet was another newborn (“a lot punier,” she recalled), whose little tag announced, “I’m a Boy!” There we lay, innocent of a distinction — between a female object and a male subject — that would shape our destinies. It would also shape Beauvoir’s great treatise on the subject. Beauvoir was then a thirty-eight-year-old public intellectual who had been enfranchised for only a year. Legal birth control would be denied to French women until 1967, and legal abortion, until 1975.
