The next scene where we see evidence that their relationship is not an easy one is in Act 2:4. We also see Elizabeth let her emotions out and how John realises that actually Abigail is a pathetic, manipulative child. The main aspects of making the relationship hard in this scene are the affair and strict Puritan society. Betrayal, love and loyalty all come into play in this scene. Miller creates a situation of irony in this chapter with the arrest of Rebecca Nurse and Elizabeth Proctor. These characters are the most innocent in the play, yet are accused of witchcraft by two of the most arrogant, untrustworthy people, Thomas Putnam and Abigail Williams. He also makes the audience feel a sense of helplessness as the play unfolds and how characters seem bound by the law but also the superstition and this is one of the main points that Miller is trying to get across. Laws should not control you if they are corrupt. In this scene we see how desperate Abigail has become and how far she will go to poses John Proctor. She in fact stabs herself with a needle to frame Elizabeth for witchcraft which will ultimately be the cause of her death and therefore leave John for Abigail. This is the scene were Cheever arrests Elizabeth on charge of witchcraft and upon hearing this Elizabeth calls Abigail a murderer who must be ripped out of the world. This breaks the icy exterior of Elizabeth and for the first time we see how she really feels about Abigail. She can’t hold her emotions in any more but after she has done this she goes back to her old self calm and responsible. It is like she is trying to contain herself and stop herself from saying things that may get her into more trouble or hurt John. She thinks of the children and does not mention Abigail again, “There is bread enough for the morning.” and “Ill go
