The Chrysalids Essay The Chrysalids by John Wyndham is a very grim book. That being said it, is also a very good depiction of where our society could be heading. The book ends very hopefully. The characters are finally able to live a life free of fear and judgment, which is what everyone truly wants. “Sealand must be a funny place. Everyone there can make think-pictures – well, nearly everyone- And nobody wants to hurt anybody for doing it!” (Wyndham, P.145) In Sealand almost everyone can communicate through telepathy like the group in Waknuk. “She says everybody wants to make them, [telepathic children] and people who cant do it work much harder to get better at it.”(Wyndham, P.145)Sealand is one of the few safe havens for these people. In Sealand not everyone can talk using telepathy. The ones who can have a higher opinion of themselves and think the others are beneath them. “She says that people who can only talk with words have something missing. She says we out to be sorry for them because, however old they grow, they’ll never be able to understand each other much better. They’ll have to be one-at-a-times and never think-togethers”(Wyndham, P.146) Just because they think themselves more important than the non telepaths dosn't mean that they don't pity the non-telepaths. “ … the strain of people who could think-together began. In time, those who were able to do it best found others who could do it a little and taught them to develop it. It was natural for people who could share thoughts to tend to marry one another, so that the strain was strengthened.”(Wydnham, P.157) Sealand has the knowledge needed to enhance the groups telekinetic abilities. In Sealand the group will learn how to project their thoughts farther and cleared. The Sealanders will even try and teach Petra to project her thoughts so they don't daze the telopaths around her.
