Are the changes of the different generations causing more harm than good to teenagers ? As generations come and go, they each possess individual values and attitudes that strike them apart from other. A gap has always been noted between the current generation and the others before it. Acting like a barrier, it keeps the different generations distinct. A number of factors play role in the creation of this barrier. The improvement in technology and the differences in the media and even food we eat are a few of these factors that are contributing to the gap between generations. Technology is fast becoming the latest driving force behind the generation gap. Teenagers’ and even children’s lives are shaped in very deliberate ways by technologies. The explosive growth of smartphones, laptops and even electrical appliances in the kitchen is transforming teenagers’ lives. A survey conducted on local high school students showed that teens were routinely sending at least one hundred texts everyday - that is one every few minutes. Peter Johnson of Wales University says that too much texting can lead to temporary or permanent damage to the thumbs. The improvement of technology in the kitchen have brought along devices that have made the work almost nothing for teens. These include dishwasher, rice cooker and handmixer. It goes without saying that the improvement of media has contributed greatly to the generation gap. The inventions of social media networks as well as the changes in shows are a few factors that affects teenagers’ lives on a daily basis. Movies today contain significantly more sex and violence than movies twenty years ago. They portray sex as a casual thing and in turn cause curious teenagers to engage in sexual behavior and are left feeling used and emotionally detached as they are not ready for these experiences.
