However by doing this, does the documentary lose authenticity? I aim to analyse various techniques Gordon uses in structuring ‘The King of Kong’, and how they relate to classical Hollywood cinema. I will focus on the subjects’ portrayal and how he builds the characters and story, as well as filmmaking techniques he has used in line with structuring the documentary, for example editing choices. I will use this to focus on authenticity, and the balance Gordon places between entertainment and an accurate account of events. In Bordwell’s definition of classical Hollywood cinema, the narrative is focused on a goal-oriented protagonist: a hero who is drawn into a situation, which he must resolve in some way.
These films will be analysed to see specifically how the above idea manifests in these films in the making of a western genre. To understand the Western genre and how it applies in any way, one must first understand the concept of genre. Various interpretations make for various points of view. The notion that different types of literature exist was first introduced by Aristotle in his Poetics (Buscombe, 2013). According to The Batsford Dictionary of Drama genre is a” subcategory of an art form, with its own codes and conventions.”(Hodgson 1988:149:149).The Academic Dictionary of Drama on the other hand explains genre as “the general type or form of a literary work…” (Pandey 2005:107).
Auteur Theory – John Ford. A director’s film reflects a personal creative vision as if he were the primary auteur. The word “auteur” is French, meaning “author” in English. The use of Auteur theory has influenced film criticism since 1954, the use of “Auteurism” helps critics to analyse films or to understand the characteristics that identify the director as auteur. John Ford was an American film director from 1917 to 1966.
Josh Litman Josh Litman Prof. Janelle Blankenship T.A. Caitlin Foster Film Studies 1020 1 A Director's Signature: What Makes Hitchcock an Auteur? According to The Film Experience, auteur theory holds that "a film bears the creative imprint of one individual, usually the director, whether or not it is considered a great piece of art," and that it "is taken to reveal the personality of its director," (p. 464). In other words, it suggests that a director may have a signature style, or 'stamp,' that permeates his or her body of work. Auteurism can be observed in the thematic, aesthetic, and ideological concerns of a director.
1. In the context of film history and criticism, what is an auteur? An auteur is when the director/filmmaker has so much control and input into the movie, they they themselves are considered the “author”. 2. What is meant by the term genre?
The events may be arranged chronologically or nonchronologically and may be factual, fictional, or a blend of the two. (262) Together with narrative, form is another technique often used to narrate so as to attract audiences’ attention. Just as William H. Phillips says: Structure, which some scholars and theorists call form, refers to the parts of a text and their arrangement. In a fictional film, the selection and order of events help viewers comprehend the story and strongly influence how they respond…Fictional structure (characters, goals, and conflicts); some functions of beginnings, middles, endings; combination of different brief stories (plotlines) into a larger, more complex story. (264) Classical narrative form is commonly known as linear narrative which refers to stories told in a single line with logical order and ends with an assured conclusion, usually seen in traditional Hollywood films.
It is a film based in the DDR. Another film based in the DDR and which I consider note worthy is ,,Goodbye Lenin’’. Both of these films show what life was like in the former DDR. I would like to use these films to talk about the importance and effect that the DDR had on those who lived in the old Republic. I will begin with a short history of the DDR and some clarifications.

With this film, Welles introduced many new filmmaking innovations. Some of the innovations were in cinematography, storytelling techniques, and special effects, lighting and framing of a scene. One of the greatest movies of all time was Orson Welles's Citizen Kane. Almost all of the movies of the time were told chronologically and had a beginning, middle, and an end. Citizen Kane was the first movie to tell the audience the end of the movie in the beginning.
Jeunet is influenced from the ‘cinéma du look’ and the ‘French New Wave’ film conventions to the more recent, ‘cinéma de banlieue’ which are able to be brought to light because of the theme of memory and its distortion. Jeunet amalgamates three heterogeneous areas of memory in ‘A Very Long Engagement’ (Jeunet 2004) to establish and evaluate the power and frailty of memory “Memory plays a complex role in Jeunet’s film, which enacts both its repression and its return” (Ezra 15). Firstly to be discussed is artistic memory, memories and emotions of the spectator are rendered because of an association with another memory from other sources, e.g. film and art. Secondly to be evaluated is personal memory which is autobiographical memory and finally, historical memory, memories that are considered facts in history.
