The Auteur Theory: Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) This essay is going to discuss director Alfred Hitchcock is an auteur in film. First, there will be an introduction of Auteur Theory. After that, an introduction of Director Alfred Hitchcock would be presented. This essay is going to focus on personal style and interior meanings of Hitchcock’s work. The meanings were presented by Mise-en-scene, montage and story plot. This essay would discuss among Rear Window (1954), Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960) and North by Northwest (1959). Auteur Theory Auteur theory was introduced Alexandre Astruc, Francois Truffaut and Andrew Sarris. In the article The Birth of a New Avant-Barde: La Camera-Stylo, Astruc invent a terminology La camera au stylo. It means that camera is pen and the director is the author of the film. Film itself is an expression. Film is not just entertainments; it is the thoughts of director, although it is abstract. The films are unique and there are significant and character in the films. Moreover, Francois Truffaut emphasized on mise-en-scene of a film. Truffaut once said, “There are no good and bad movies, only good and bad directors”. Truffaut thinks that an auteur has his own vision or style. Sarris introduced three premises of auteur. 1)Technical competence, 2)Personal style and 3)Interior meaning. In this essay, personal style and interior meaning would have more elaboration on Hitchcock’s auteur significant. Alfred Hitchcock is the Master of Suspense. Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock, KBE (1899-1980) was an English film director and producer. He pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. After a successful career in British cinema in both silent films and early talkies, renowned as England's best director, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood in 1939and became a U.S. citizen in 1955.
