Stefani Williams U.S. History We didn’t start the fire Children of Thalidomide: Thalidomide is an anti nausea and sedative drug that was introduced in the late 1950’s. They have used this drug as a sleeping pill, but then were discovered to help pregnant women with the effects of morning sickness. This pill was sold from 1957 until 1962 but, it was removed after being found to be a teratogen, which caused many different forms of birth defects. Birth Defects: In the late 1950’s and early 60’s more than 10,000 children in 46 countries were born with deformities due to the use of thalidomide. Buddy was the youngest of three siblings his brothers Larry and Travis taught him to p ay instruments at age 5. His voice won him a talent contest singing a song "Have You Ever Gone Sailing (Down the River of Memories). The crickets: Buddy holly had seen Elvis Presley perform a song in Lubbock in 1955. On October 15, 1955, Holly, along with Bob Montgomery and Larry Wellborn, opened the bill for Presley. On May 27, 1957, "That'll Be the Day" was released as a single, credited to the Crickets to try to bypass Decca's claimed legal rights. When the song became a hit, Decca decided not to press its claim. The song had hi the top of the billboard. Holly helped win over an all-black audience to rock. In August 1957, the Crickets were the only white performers on a national tour including black neighbor’s tours. Holly’s wife: June 1958, he met Maria Elena Santiago. Holly had asked marina to have dinner with him that night. Holly proposed marriage to her on their very first date. While they were having dinner he got up and came back with his hands behind his back. He brought out a red rose and said this is for you. Would you marry me? There was a ring. Holly went to her guardian's house the next morning and Maria came running at him and jumped into his arms, which was a sign to him that it was a yes. They married in Lubbock on August 15, 1958, less than two months
