Because of the fear of privacy invasion, the different federal agency databases were held on individual agency specific computer systems and were not accessible to anyone, but the owner. Having such a compartmentalized system did not give law enforcement nor intelligence the ability to assist each other in putting together potentially complex terror plots, and often the more sophisticated the terror plot, the more potential for mass killing (White, 2006). Communication is key in all parts of life, and especially important when dealing with such dire consequences. The USA PATRIOT Act, in Title VII, granted the expansion of information sharing systems in order to better facilitate communication between all agencies involved in counterterrorism. This called for the implementation of the Regional Information Sharing System (RISS) as a central database for all law enforcement to use (USA PATRIOT Act, 2001).
Though in the attempts to obtain security, the people of the United States are giving up their freedoms and others are having those same freedoms taken away from them. The pursuit of stopping terrorism has taken precedence over an individuals civil rights. Surveillance has increased in attempts to catch terrorists. Under the USA Patriot Act which is the "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism," police agencies are given the authority to conduct Internet and expanded telephone surveillance, as well as loosen the restrictions placed on the C.I.A in the 1970's to engage in domestic surveillance. The Patriot act presents a broadened definition of terrorism, and provides some level of detention of suspected terrorists as
doesn’t have many things to go against it. One safe way to stop terrorism is the Visa Security Program. The Visa Security Program interdicts criminals, terrorists and others who would exploit the legal visa process to enter the United States. The program serves as the agency’s frontline in protecting the United States against terrorist and criminal organizations. While many security measures focus on screening names against lists of known terrorist or criminal suspects, the program relies on HSI special agents to identify potential terrorist or criminal suspects and stops them before they can reach the U.S. Another way to stop terrorism are scanners.
A terrorist threat/ attack and a nuclear threat are real attacks that still go on today in our country and our people are scared of. In my opinion both of them are alike. They make the government have to evaluate everything that is going on and it deters the economic growth in our community, on this causes the government to take advantage of their view of defense against an upcoming attack. A war and an attack such as 9/11 are two different types of attacks. And these are attacks that people will forever remember.
Down with the Patriot Act The Patriot Act is a very controversial law. It allows the government much more room to do as they please. Some of these practices that government officials can do are monitoring phone calls, emails, and going through personal records. They say this will help prevent terrorism, but is losing one’s privacy really worth it? Could there be a better way to prevent terrorism?
The Founders of the Constitution wanted to create a strong central government but were concern about it having unlimited power as they new it could be dangerous. As James Madison wrote, “Ambition must be made to counteract ambition” (1). Once the Constitution was complete it was a government with three branches (Executive, Legislative, Judicial) that were independent of each other but which had checks and balance over the action of the others. In this essay, we will see how Bush has attempted to fight terrorism and some of the checks and balances of the Judicial and Legislative branches that were for and against his policy. On September 11, in 2001, four planes were hijacked by Al Qaeda terrorists and were then used as human missiles again US targets.
We define terrorism as using force to influence or change a political decision. Given that there may be an array of situations the U.S. government and the American people are faced with on a daily basis, most would probably agree in saying that terrorism is the most imperative issue we are not only becoming victims to , but are asked to deal with as well as finding a solution for. Many questions have been raised such as can we make a world a safe place? Can people not eradicate other people and live united? Can there be no terrorism and no terrorists?
Since September 11, 2001, the United States has had many changes to its security and its focus on who is a threat to it. The government created a department called homeland security and its whole purpose is to protect, prevent, and recover from terroristic or any type of threats America is given. As people may have noticed, airports and other things involving the risks of other people’s lives have gotten more difficult to get through. They have introduced new methods to point out if there is any kind of threat whether it be bombs or weapons used to put people in danger. It’s a very serious job that the people that run these checkpoints are very pains taking and very accurate at what they do.
What can be done to prevent hate crimes in society today? A hate crime is a crime committed by someone who is prejudice against a certain group or individual. These crimes can range from simple kindergarten name-calling to terrorist airplane attacks on the Twin Towers in New York or brutal planned school shootings, such as Columbine in Colorado. Hate exists in uncountable forms all over the country. In every part of the United States there are crimes being committed out of hate towards certain individuals or groups, but these crimes can be put to a halt with more strict laws against crime, public awareness, and world peace.
There were many reasons why the consolidated terror watch-list was created. The main reason it was created was to help the government and other agencies slow down the time of processing people’s names in the computer. Data governance that would help the organization manage the availability, usability, integrity, and security of the data seems to be missing. It would help increase the security, data quality privacy, and compliance with government regulation. The FBI Terrorist Screening Center was established to standardize and organize information about suspected terrorist between multiple government agencies into a single list to enhance communication between agencies.
