Encouraging and establishing student self-control through a process of promoting positive student achievement and behavior is what every classroom needs. Classroom rules and procedures should be established with students the first week of school. Each student should have full understanding and be aware of what is expected of him/her. Providing a safe learning environment where students can participant is a key factor in classroom management. A student needs to feel comfortable with themselves, others, and the teacher, so there can be meaningful discussion and interactions.
He though the purpose of education was not so much the acquisition of a predetermined set of skills, but rather the realization of the student's full potential and the ability to use those skills for the greater good. Dewey notes that, "to prepare him for the future life means to give him command of himself; it means so to train him that he will have the full and ready use of all his capacities.” Although Dewey's ideas were very widely discussed, they were implemented chiefly in small experimental schools attached to colleges of education. He goes on to talk about how argument at its most elementary form contains the same basic elements of a scholarly argument with less sophisticated language. This is certain because with any argument there is a claim and a counter claim supported by individual judgments and beliefs. It does not matter if the argument is between educated individuals or not, the basic elements remain constant. Yet today there seems to be many students lacking these basic elements of argument. The problem in the school structure that Graff recognizes is lack of persuasion to get students to argue.
NCLB set forth a certain criteria to be met, but allowed the states to determine how they would accomplish it. Therefore, each state handles assessment and accountability differently. This makes it hard to show success or failure of the programs. Supporters and critics alike can cite research that supports their opinion. My opinion of NCLB is it is flawed, developmentally inappropriate, ill funded, ←and→ leaving more students, teachers, ←and→ schools behind than ever before because The tests have turned into the objective of classroom instruction rather than the measure of teaching ←and→ learning.
They do not have any student input at all with them and they read like a laundry list. In comparison to the best practices, “Suggests that students should actively participate in the creation of guidelines governing classroom behavior. This belief suggests that students will support rules they establish. Best practices recommend minimizing the number of rules. Children have a tendency to recommend a laundry list of rules.”(Dunbar, 2004) In my teaching career, this is not a move I would recommend.

Sadly, it is still in need of reconstruction and promise so that we can provide the education that our children so desperately need and deserve. Teachers and a well defined curriculum are the necessary tools that actually teach students what they need to learn. Why is everything so complicated? Diane Ravitch, in “The Death and Life of the Great American School System” has written about many topics that are involved in the strengths and weaknesses that represent our educational system.
For instance, there are only a few things that a person can legally use as reference in the hiring or acceptance charade. Such as; prior experiences, school evaluations, skills, and in some cases even social aspects. If you remove the school portion, room would be left for more personal judgements like race, age ,gender, sexual orientation and so on. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying these things do not already happen but I am saying personal judgement would most likely occur more often. In summary, The American grading system may not be flawless but it is crucial to the development of all students.
This commitment models the expectations for the staff and proves that I, as a principal, must strive to create a school culture that has a positive influence on life and learning in my school. The entire thought of developing successful learning communities in my school is a great challenge. I realize that I have much to learn and everything will not happen as quickly as needed.
