Genetics Case Study: Tay Sachs
Individuals that are part of the Tay Sachs interdisciplinary team include:
Genetic Counselor
A genetic counselor is usually a healthcare professional that possess an advanced degree. This person is the focal person of whom the parents can communicate with in regards to the Tay Sachs disease. The genetic counselor will review the family and medical history of parents and evaluate the probability of the disease occurring in the future. This person will teach the parents about how Tay Sachs occurs, testing that is involved, how to manage the disease, prevention and resources available to them. They will also keep abreast of the tests and procedures associated with Tay Sachs Disease. The Genetic counselor will discuss current research in Tay Sachs disease which may include clinical trials. The role of the genetic counselor is to ensure that parents are well informed and is able to answer any questions the parents may have.
Neurologist
A neurologist will have a medical degree and specialize in Neurology. They will have experience in Tay Sachs disease and be able to provide knowledge and information of tests and protocols in managing this disease. They are vital to this team as they will have the ability to order and inform the parents of any upcoming tests that need to be done.
Nursing
Another vital member of the disciplinary team is the nurse. An ideal candidate would be a pediatric nurse who has had experience with patients with Tay Sachs Disease. This person will not only provide nursing skills, they will also be an educator. Nurses are essential in ensuring that health literacy is recognized the parents are explained things in layman terms.
