One of these journeys involves a Cyclopes whom Odysseus out smarts, but wasn’t aware of the fact that the Cyclopes, Polyphemus was the son of Poseidon. Allowing his curiosity to get in the way of what would’ve been the best decision, he decides to make an instant halt at the Cyclopes’ island. On contact with Polyphemus, Odysseus gives him a false name. Once the men escaped the crisis Polyphemus had awaiting them, Odysseus gives the now blinded Cyclopes his real, birth given information stating with high self-esteem, “ Odysseus, raider of cities, /took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!” (Homer 1.459-460). Cursing Odysseus, Polyphemus prays to his father asking punishment of Odysseus.
He then fills a gratuitous amount of the paragraph stating how the advertisement is very negative toward anyone that does not use the product. Lantry makes sure to include words that contain negative connotations such as “Blotchy, repellent, neglected, and humiliated” when describing the advertisement to the reader. By this point Lantry has exposed his unmistakable bias against the ad and undoubtedly the remaining ads in his article. In his third paragraph Lantry gives reference to the visual content supporting the Resinol Soap advertisement. Lantry is undeniably descriptive when illustrating the visual reinforcement of the ad but once again conveys an underlying negative attitude toward the ad.
P. 14 They sought forgetfulness, not remembrance…A town populated by men who had run as far as they could flee. P. 17 Perhaps there can be no perfection. Only levels of imperfection. P. 31 You must know when to move on. To search too long for perfection can also paralyse.
His fingers become covered with a yellow stain and people think that he is hygienically unclean. He forces Toby to do the paper round but exploits him and does not give him his money which angers Toby (221); he has to pawn his rifles. He is referred to as a “sissy” because he initially he does not want to fight Arthur. He abuses him because he discards the almost-empty mustard bottle (171) and when Dwight strikes him despite his finger injury, Rosemary finally knows she must remove Toby from the household.
This takes place when Ellison is describing the Ticktockman. This is indirect characterization because the author describes the Ticktockman in dialogue. While time is moving forward so is Ellison while he introduces mood to the “Repent, Harlequin” story. Presenting mood to the “Repent Harlequin” story makes the interest even more addictive. “ Marshall Delahanty tried to run … and the officer of the Ticktockman blanked his correlate, and Marshall Delahanty keeled over, running , and his heart stopped and the blood dried up on its way to his brain and he was dead that’s all… because that’s what would happen to the Harlequin if ever that Ticktockman found out his real name”( Ellison 884).
Especially when he had a conversation with Nick, he said, “If we don’t look out the white race—will be utterly submerged.” (13) Even his voice was “a gruff husky tenor, added to the impression of fractiousness he conveyed” (7) Tom wasn’t afraid to speak his opinion, but when it came to himself, he would just ignore it and keep his chin up held high. Throughout the novel it would appear Tom was very hypocritical as well. When he found out about Daisy and Gatsby’s romance, he could not handle his temper and would blow up on the both of them stating, “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from nowhere make love to your wife. Well, if that’s the idea you can count me out…Nowadays people begin by sneering at family life institutions, and next they’ll throw everything overboard and have intermarriage between black and white” (130). Even though Tom himself was having an affair with Myrtle, he belittled his wife for falling for another man telling her that her actions would ruin a family, when in fact he was doing the same thing, but he was not in control of the situation also flaring his
‘Ralph flung back his hair. One arm pointed at the empty horizon.’ Ralph flinging back his hair shows that he does not was not anything to be in the way as he says the devastating news. He then pointed his arm before saying anything. At this point, the boys would have been curious as to why Ralph was not overjoyed at the fact that they had finally caught the pig. Then Ralph said the words that ‘struck them into silence’ “There was a ship.” When it had finally sunk in (no pun intended) that although they finally had food, they let the chance of rescue slip though their fingers.
Derek Xu 10/14/2013 AP Composition Mr. Kramer Great Gatsby Essay Revisions (Note: Edited content will either contain strikethroughs or written in italic font) The quote “Man is free at the moment he wishes to be” entails a notion describing how man can choose what he/she wills if one desires so. The aforementioned statement is contradicted by the work The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald, as the sentiment leads to the ultimate demise of the book’s characters. The love-bound Jay Gatsby, cynical but collected Nick Carraway, and the figurine-like Dasiy Buchanan are all able to refute the theme presented by Voltaire through their actions and how they were subject to the idealistic fallacy of the prosperous Roaring 20’s.
