If so, you are probably experiencing some sort of excitement as you continue to read. If not, I will reveal the answer very soon; but in the meantime, please keep an open mind and heart as I share with you about one of the greatest companies in our world, today. Since its first store opening in 1971 in Seattle, Washington, this company has continually strived to provide a unique interaction to every customer who walks through the door. This interaction, or connection, is something that the company is built around—everything they do honors that connection. For over forty years, their heart has been to provide an intriguing balance of a constantly improving product and a continual relationship with people. In 2012, this thriving company had over $13 billion in annual revenue, 17,000+ stores globally, and 151,000 full-time employees. This company is Starbucks. ("Starbucks Company Statistics", 2013). Upon delving into the history of Starbucks, you will find that its name originates from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, an American classic novel about the whaling industry in the 1800s. Ten years after the first store opening, Howard Schultz joins Starbucks and quickly catalysts the image of Starbucks—introducing Italy’s coffee culture and specialties led to coffee crazy Seattleites. Within ten years of Schultz joining Starbucks, they had stores operating nationally and globally! Starbucks eventually became a publicly traded company after they marked history by being one of the first to offer stock options to part-time employees. Today, Starbucks continues to thrive and keeps customers intrigued by evolving and new products.
