Supporting people with dementia is important the most vital part is assisting them to enjoy their life as much as possible supporting them to carry on with hobbies and interests as enabling them to have as much independence as possible by giving them choice and the chance to make decisions. Communicating with people with dementia can be difficult but remaining patient and being clear in what you saying is important , as sometimes the person you are communicating with can be confused or upset. Using their name or preferred form of address is best and knowing what you are talking about so you do not become confused yourself will help. Other things may make communicating harder these could be physical disability such strokes cancer of the mouth area and cerebral palsy and injury to the jaw as well as things like Bells Palsy. Can hinder or prevent people speaking. Visual impairment can be caused by various conditions when people cant see normally it can prevent them from seeing facial expressions and body language and gestures which is important form of everyday communication. People with dementia can inactive during the day because they are scared of falling, have lack of motivation or coordination problems. As such exercise should be a part of the care plan and encouraging them to do so is important. Personal care, you should always think of privacy and dignity when it comes to personal care you should also be encouraging during tis time and ensure that it is a s pleasant as possible as if done wrong you could cause the person to become anxious and frightened of these times you should be aware of what the person like doing and how and how much they can do themselves. How we interact with people with dementia is vital as doing this in a wrong manner can break trust and cause upset and further anxiety or confusion. Different people experience living with dementia in differently this can be from the support they get from their family and friends , having different symptoms progressing at different speeds as well as the type of dementia. There are some symptoms which can be mistaken for dementia such as depression, delirium, age related memory loss, this is because these are some of the signs of early dementia and share many characteristics with dementia. * Depression difficulty sleeping, lack
