A Child Called “It” By: David Pelzer July 17, 2014 Chapter 1, pages 1-15 The first chapter is printed in all italics and is told in the present rather than the past tense. I love the way the author chose to start almost at the end of his story than at the beginning. Dave’s purpose in doing this was to get the reader interested and shocked by the story that is to follow. As I started to read the chapter, I was surprised at the fact that Dave’s mother treats her child the way she does; she orders him to wash the dishes at a time limit. Dave is now in the fifth grade and nothing has changed at home. He has abandoned hope, and no longer believes in God. When he is given food, he eats “like a homeless dog.” He hates everything, but his mother the most. He also hates his father, who promised many times to rescue him but never did. Dave’s mother also yells at her husband, who comes home drunk. But then her attitude to him changes. One day she spends hours preparing a dinner for him, and making sure she looks good. Unfortunately, Dave’s father comes home late with a friend from work badly drunk. And he has returned only to pack an overnight bag and leave. When Thanksgiving comes, Dave is allowed to sit with the family to eat, but his mother and father argue. A few days after Christmas, Dave’s parents separate for good. I was shocked that his father left and didn't take Dave with him. As his mother drives him and his brothers home he is scared
