Unit CU 2942 Promote Professional Development Emma Drake Understand principles of professional development 1.1 Explain the importance of continually improving knowledge and practice Developing your professional ability is vital amongst the childcare spectrum as things are changing all the time. As a professional, I have a professional responsibility to engage in continuous professional development. This means taking action to keep my skills and knowledge up to date and seeking to improve my capabilities across the range of tasks I carry out daily. Continually improving my knowledge is essential to my role and ensures that I have skills and knowledge needed to create the best provision for children. I need to be aware of the most up to date legislations and guidelines, including the EYFS and welfare requirements.
Learning new skills and refreshing training enables me to progress, and achieve within my career and working practices. Continually improving knowledge and practice can be named as professional development which is an essential component of organisational success. Professional development enables an organisation to keep up to date and to change proactively so that their service is relevant and appropriate. Planned development is listened to achieve specific outcomes that may be either focused on the needs of an individual and may contribute to the learning needs of an organisation. This implies that it is an on-going activity and needs to be thought about as something that is incremental with different elements contributing to a large whole.
It is a skill in itself to be able to listen to feedback carefully without becoming defensive. It is often easy to begin to defend the reasons why I do things, but the key is to remember that the focus is on improving performance. It is my responsibility to ensure my knowledge and skills are up to date. It is important to regularly attend training and refresher courses such as First Aid, health and safety training. Legislations and procedures are constantly changing and it is important to maintain your knowledge and keep it correct.
The focus of training tends to be on the staff group delivering the services, to ensure that all recommendations and standards are achieved. p.d.p is important for my career, increases my employability, and helps me progress and gain promotion within my work place. As a senior member of staff, I am responsible for others: Staff, residents, visitors, etc so it is paramount that I am knowledgeable in all areas of management, Also is important for me to ensure that staff recive the training to ensure that they are aware of and follow, the current health & social care standards, legislation, and guidelines for good practice. .This will ensure a good work force are following all the same standadrs to ensure that best practices are met and a high quality of care is given to the clients, I ensure the team of staff i supervise have regular traing some that is refresher training on a yearly basisfoe example manual handling/administration of medication and the medication error policy and procedure this is one i ensure ,as i dont want any medication error but if this was to hapen, as we are only human i want to stress the importance of reporting and what the out comes are if you dont report/safe guarding which is in house and deliverd by yearly trained D.A.P.A(DESIGNATED ADULT PROTECTUON .) /health and safty training and ensure my team have read or
1.1 Explain the importance of continually improving knowledge and practice Professional development is a hugely important aspect in any industry to ensure the success and effectiveness of a business. Managers must ensure they continue to update and refresh their knowledge through, for example; research, training, seminars, workshops etc. in order to ensure current working practices are meeting legislation such as employment laws, equal opportunities etc. and meeting standards such as the care council code of practice and national minimum standards and regulations as set out by CSIW. It is vital for management to be aware and up to date with relevant legislation and information, as it is a part of their role to guide, support and influence other staff to do well in their own roles.
Amongst the company's policies and procedures, you will find such guidelines, as 'equality and diversity'., and 'dealing with harassment and bullying at work' These policies exists to enable all employees to work cohesively. Please make sure that you familiarise yourself with all of the company policies that will assist you within your job role. It is not only important for the company to have full and up to date details of agreed ways of working, it is also a legal requirement. It is vital that this company can show up to date documents, in the forms of policies and procedures, so that employees can gain a better insight into how the company works with others to promote best practice. Little or no documentation relating to agreed ways of working, would breach national regulations, and the standards of this company.

It is important to continually improve your knowledge and practice in order to remain aware and keep updated regards current guidelines, legislations and standards relative to your practice. As manager it is your role and responsibility to ensure staff are kept up to date with and legislation, standards and guideline changes. As a leading member of management it is even more vital that I am aware and up to date with the above, as part of my role is to guide, support and influence other staff to do well in their own roles. My own professional develop does not only impact on me but on other staff, the company and people who use the service. Reflective practice is a huge part of professional development and I need to be skilful in this to really benefit from it; criticising your own practice isn’t always easy but if you take a step back and look at it from different points of view it can really benefit how you recognise and utilise your skills. To improve my own knowledge is very important to me and I really enjoy learning new skills which can benefit my roles or future roles.
