Not only did the river supply the needed moisture to the crops, but the banks of the river contain fertile soils that were necessary for the thriving food source. The people of the ancient civilization had to learn the cycle of the river to make it functional for their society. The river and surrounding areas experience a flood every July, this water had to be
Differences for the cities are the way they have succeeded economically. Some are rich in agriculture while others have established trading routes to attain food to sustain their populations. Another key difference between all the cities is their tolerance for religion, some countries are open to other faiths while some are closed and use violence to inflict their religion. 3) Inferences that future historians would make on these cities is that they are all highly populated, they are all port cities open for trade, they are all multicultural and they all are flourishing economically. Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver are thriving economically because they are all port cities which enable them to trade.
Advantages of levees are that they can protect a building from the surrounding area of the Mississippi and there will be no pressure from the water to cause structural damage to the building. Disadvantages of levees on the Mississippi are that they may be expensive if they are artificially made and they require a lot of land area. Levees have been heightened in places to over 15 metres and strengthened and there are almost 3000km of levees along the main river and its tributaries. Overspill channels on the Mississippi can store excess water in times of a flood and then release it after the risk of floods has past. Advantages of overspill channels are that they increase the capacity of the river by providing an alternative additional channel, especially during times of high flow and disadvantages
It also had a stable government, which allowed for the people to begin industrializing in the first place, harbors for trade, a very large population resulting in a very large workforce, and many water ways throughout the country to transport materials and products as well as to use for water power at mills. There are several reasons why the Industrial revolution started in the first place. One reason being that there was widespread resistance to disease in Europe as well as a reliable food supply, allowing for steady population growth, which in return created more demand for products, which in turn resulted in new ways of producing products more efficiently in response to demand. As a result of Industrialization, a new economic philosophy arose. Capitalism called for the lack of government intervention in the economy.
Both Mesopotamia and the Nile River Valley had a very high percentage in agricultural surpluses to organize formal states, develop cultural traditions and support specialized labor because of their large population. In addition, Mesopotamia and the Nile River Valley both had relations and regular trading’s with people from outside their own regions. They gained motivation for political and social organizations. This led to both civilizations advancing in technology where the Nile River Valley invented the calendar and time, and the Mesopotamians discovering the wheel of transportation and codes of
Task 1: Geography and the Development/Diffusion of Human Societies Princess Dana Catacutan Part A The most significant geographic factor that contributed to the development of the Fertile Crescent or Mesopotamia were the two rivers that surrounds it. Tigris and Euphrates rivers served great source of food and used for irrigation of crops. It was an ideal place for early people to settle in Mesopotamia to utilize the life giving water of these two rivers. Also, the two rivers were used for transportation and trade. Irrigation from the two rivers made it possible for the early settlers to farm and had abundant crops for trade.
Rivers helped civilizations like the Yellow River in China and the Indus River in India because rivers helped them create irrigation systems to help water their crops. This geographical feature has also helped them by a mode of transportation, water and food; Rivers is a good way to get places by boats. Rivers also gave people water and food because there is fishes in the river so hey can eat that. Mountains have also helped civilizations develop. Mountains are areas of lands with steep sides that rise sharply from surrounding land.
These rivers helped farmers with transportation, which then helped their agriculture grow. As the society became more advanced the people started to have responsibilities. Such as priests communicated with the gods, rulers led and governed, warriors defended the greater community, artists helped define record, and enhance the power of mortals as well as the gods (p.61). Art then became a way of communication with the gods. Though Mesopotamia and Egypt were alike there were some differences between the two.
These civilizations also shared another similarity. These civilizations both built irrigation systems to carry out water from the rivers. Mesopotamia canalled the waters from the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Egypt built irrational canals to control the waters from the Nile. This was a similarity between Egypt and Mesopotamia because during this time period people relied on water for many things such as drinking, bathing and most importantly for keeping their land fertile.
The foundation of civilization rested on the ability to produce and sustain agricultural products that fueled the growth of populations in the area. In Mesopotamia, the salinated soil and irregular schedule of the flooding rivers made the development of civilization difficult, however through implementation of irrigation techniques, the populous of the Fertile Crescent was able to claw out some semblance of a life. From the development of irrigation, small communities of humans grew. With the growth of these communities, what we now identify with as traits of civilization arose. Things such as pictographs and social and communal norms grew into written language and written laws that were proliferated throughout the region.
