Gun Ownership and the “Southern Subculture of Violence”: An Article Review Gun Control is one of the most controversial subjects in the United Staes of America and the ideas of more or less gun control during campaigns is a main focus of the populous. In Dixon and Lizotte’s(1987) “Gun Ownership and the “Southern Subculture of Violence””, the thesis is “we attempt to correct this deficiency in the research by ascertaining the relationships among the three hypothetically related phenomena: (1) region, (2) subcultures of violence, and (3) gun ownership." The answer whether there is a southern subculture of violence is no. After the economic and demographic factors were controlled, there was no difference found between those socialized in the South and currently residing there, and whites. Though, the researchers did find a differing defensive attitude rate amongst those in the South. Those with a higher education and income were more defensive but this decreased with age. The second question was whether gun ownership plays a central role in subcultures of violence and again the answer is no. Politicians who seek to strengthen or weaken our gun control laws would also benefit, because, it will help give them the foundation needed to build a good understanding of the issue. This article will also give the casual reader a better understanding of this highly controversial subject within our society. The first step in ratifying an issue is better educating the populous so, when it comes time to vote, they can make an informed decision. Holistically, we have seen more papers written on this topic and many continue to support the information found within this article. Throughout this article one can find that age, race, education, income, religion, violent attitudes, defensive attitudes, and geographic areas affect do affect gun ownership. A higher crime rate in an area will drive up the gun ownership in that area thus, as long as crime is high in some areas the gun ownership in those certain areas will remain
