Frameworks are significant in shaping the work that we do in schools around the promotion of wellbeing. Select a key framework (national or state based) covered in this module that informs school-based practice around the promotion of student wellbeing. Discuss the major principles of this framework and analyse their implications for promoting student wellbeing. Settings are major social structures that provide channels and mechanisms by which to work (Leahy, 2013). Schools are a key setting for promoting the wellbeing of young people. Frameworks are formed to create a structure for the promotion of health and wellbeing. MindMatters is a national mental health and wellbeing framework which is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. The initiative was specifically formulated for secondary schools and incorporates a whole school approach to mental health promotion based on a number of principles from the World Health Organization (MindMatters, n.d.). The MindMatters Whole School Approach refers to the practice of having a unified set of values about mental health. This approach involves students, staff, parents and local community working in unity to create a safe environmental for all, that supports mental health and wellbeing on all levels (MindMatters, n.d.). These principles are illustrated through the MindMatters Implementation Model. This model incorporates three key dimensions of the Health Promoting Schools model and also identifies four enablers for a whole school approach. The first dimension is School Ethos and Environment. This refers to having a coherent, consistent and coordinated programme in which school policies are consistent with the mental health and wellbeing aims (Weare, 2010). For the programme to be successful their needs to be positive communication and relationships across the whole school.
