| Student Observation | Amanda, Age 4 | | | 3/10/2014 | | Amanda: 4 year old, female, Caucasian, observed during a full school day (9am-4pm) at Bright Children’s Learning Center. PHYSICALDEVELOPMENT | Amanda’s physical appearance seems to be average compared to that of her classmates. She has a long, lean body and healthy glowing skin and long, thick hair. These are all signs of good nutrition and proper hygiene. One thing that Amanda does different from her other classmates is that she tends to walk on her toes, especially when nervous or uncomfortable. Her mother is aware of this problem and asks that Amanda’s teachers remind her to walk on her feet flat. Typically children grow out of this habit by age 5, but if they do not it could lead to foot pain and is also an early sign of autism.Fine Motor Skills: She is out of the tadpole stage in her drawings: Her stick figures include a head, a body, arms, legs, face, hands, feet and hair. She can recognize the written form of her name and can also write her first name completely on her own. She can properly hold and use a fork and serve herself food without assistance. Amanda is great at using scissors to cut. During center time, there was a cutting center and while she was in that center I observed her making some very detailed cuts holding the scissors correctly. These cuts included cutting out a flower picture from an old greeting card, cutting out a letter “A” for Amanda and cutting a purple heart out from a worksheet. A major advancement is that Amanda can put her shoes on the correct feet and tie the laces without any assistance. Gross Motor Skills: Amanda can run, skip, jump and hop on one foot. She can ride a bicycle with training wheels. We played a game of catch with a koosh ball during outdoor free play: I started with the ball and threw it gently to her. She caught the ball with it
