Like most African-American children I grew up with separated parents, but both my mother and father were very structured. Knowing my rights from wrongs I have plenty morals. Even though physically I’m built like others, mentally I can compete with anybody at heart. Being a smaller athlete you have to earn your respect. Since young, football has always been my dominant sport. Unfortunately my high school didn’t have a football team, so I took my shoots at basketball. Standing only 5’8 in a sport that height in a great advantage, finding ways to make it happen is what I did. I took my speed advantage and put it to use. I might’ve been too short to out jump some people or been towered over, but you had to keep me in front of you for me not to get to the basket. So I did just that… I stayed humble and attacked every chance I got, averaging 17.7 points, 6 assist, and 4 steals my senior year. With my numbers standing out colleges began calling but doubting my height schools didn’t believe I can have the same affect in college. Moreover, track is another talent I acquired. Placing 2 in Staten Island and 6th in the city for 55 meter dash I had offers from DSU, Morgan State, Claflin University, and Monroe College. I took Monroe’s offer because, firstly it was a full free ride to college and for my parents not having to come out of pocket for my education has also been something on my bucket list. I may have been raised by the streets but that doesn't make me ghetto. Growing up with separate parents was something I took as an advantage, I seen the world differently from most children. Knowing my rights from wrongs, learning from my own mistakes. The projects can either make you or break you… over achieving the expectations society had for me was a major get back.
