Steve McCurry—Photo Essay Monserrat Espin January 22, 2013 Steve McCurry is a well-known photographer; his work has been included in National Geographic, and he has published many books. This photographer is known to Afghan Girl by Steve McCurry (1984)be one of the finest photographers yet. His most recognized work is his “Afghan Girl” photograph which was published on the cover of National Geographic. When it comes to taking photographs, he knows no limit. For his war work he disguised himself in native clothes and was smuggled into Pakistan; he was one of the first photographers to actually document what was going on during the Soviet invasion first hand. His bravery and dedication has resulted him in many awards and because of this he is one of the most important documentary photographers in the world. McCurry is an inspiration to many photographers because he goes far and beyond to get his shots. Not many people would do that. His photographs are important to this society because he shows us what the news channels cannot; he gives us a first hand look at how other people around the world live, specifically the poorest people. I believe he takes these photographs to show us the real struggle people live in, and to show us that we should appreciate what we have because other people have nothing. One of his most inspiring pieces was “The Afghan Girl”, the reason for this is because of the girl’s expression in her eyes. This girl has bright, green eyes that show how much she has seen in her few years of existence. Taylor Callwood analyzes the photograph and says, “the fear manifested in her eyes is still laced with defiance.” (Callwood) I agree with what he says because the expression she has, has a lot of back story to it and says a lot about her.
