One example of how uniforms restrict learners is that "without the outlet of expression in their clothes, students may turn to inappropriate hair styles, jewelry, or makeup". So by restricting students of their clothing choice, they will still find a way to show their personality in their makeup, jewelry, and hairstyles. As stated by the Public School Review, under the First Amendment, it argues that uniforms stifle (restrain) children who feel robbed of their individualism. In addition uniforms create a false sense of security. Even if uniforms decrease violence and everyone is treated equal, the outside world does not run as orderly and smoothly as it would in a school.
Even besides the fact of students finding other ways to express themselves with their physical experience, students may even feel they have to act out just to stand out from others. Self expression is important for development, and forcing students to wear uniforms is teach them to conform to standards they do not agree with. Children are our future actresses, writers, etcetera. We do not want to teach them to conform and be like everyone else and hold their creativity inside. The issue of expenses also brings up a major disadvantage of the implementation school uniforms.
Much to the chagrin of my teens, I will be voting in favor of uniforms, or the strictest dress code policy options available. This essay was written to analyze some of the pros and cons of uniforms or standardized dress code for students and to view some of the issues educators are addressing in the educational environment concerning dress codes. School board members and educators are trying to use policies of standardized dress code or uniforms to solve some of the toughest issues in schools today. By eliminating the clothing factors that lead to false overtures of insults to gang activities, bullying, singling out of individuals, high rates of academic low grades and failures and absenteeism. Although, today’s pop
There are many positive and negative effects to requiring uniforms and dress codes in school. One negative effect school dress codes and uniforms have on students is the fact students feel they can’t express themselves the way they feel. Many who oppose of dress codes and uniforms say they can’t get up in the morning and wear what they feel like for that day. Students feel if they want to dress down that day and wear sweatpants they should be allowed to. Sara Jane wears dresses almost every day to school.
Conformity in Schools Although many people think schools should be conformed to show who has control, conformity actually just takes away from students individuality as proven by, schools making students dress a certain way, what classes are mandatory, and telling students how to prepare for standardized tests, illustrating that conformity in schools makes students less individualized. Schools making students dress a certain way takes away from their individual expression. Some schools ban kids from wearing any kind of logos/symbols/colors because of gang affiliations. If such rules are so severe, students may take extreme measures to change their look. For example, wearing crazy accessories, hair style, decorating backpacks, etc.
Coming from a High School athlete I don’t think that high school athletes rule U.S. High Schools. I think that they get the same treatment everyone else does or they may even be treated worse. Some teachers hate high school sports so if a student plays a sport in high school that student might have a disadvantage in that class. But it could also go either way if you do get that teacher that likes high school sports the teacher might go a little bit easier on you. Referring back to the Article students from Columbine High School said that high school athletes are given forms of privilege that other students perceive to be unfair and that make some athletes feel that they identify as deviant within the normative structure of the school.
Students might want to drop out because they are struggling in school, getting bullied, have a health issue, have personal family problems, or just have a planned out future that doesn't require a high school diploma. Making teens do something they absolutely don't want to do, especially after they are 16, can result in even worse outcomes. “Efforts to raise the age usually come up against the argument that requiring students to stay in school when they no longer want to be there is disruptive to the other students and not fair to the teacher”. Thats a very knowledgeable statement because its true that when teens want to drop out, they want to drop out before they are 18, so they are most likely going to be careless and disrespectful at school. Some teens have personal reasons that are sometimes urgent, and staying in school isn't an option.
Standardized testing has become a norm in American education. It has been decided that every student should be able to meet a certain goal. If not, they are below average and will have a hard time being successful in life. Children aren’t motivated to learn when teachers “teach to the test.” There has come to be an understanding that there is a certain level of knowledge demanded by society. Who decides this?
Lastly, school uniforms do not provide an academic advantage, which makes them have no upside to casual clothing schools. School administrators should not make school uniforms mandatory for students because of the many downsides they have, for the few unproven benefits they are theorized to have. Firstly, school uniforms restrict students’ freedom of choosing their own clothes and do not allow for students to express themselves freely. Clothing is a major way of expressing one’s culture, sexual orientation, feelings, and emotions and by forcing students to wear and dress a certain way, this is not possible. In fact, the First Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees that all people should have the right to express themselves freely.
There are other ways to be an individual and express yourself besides your clothing, but it does play a big role in showing others what you are like and finding out who you want to be. Clothes are an expression of who we are, and at a young age, it's important to develop confidence and self - expression. The promoting of school uniforms has prevented students from free expression. Kids are trapped in these uniforms like cages. They are unable to search for their own identity, because it has pretty much been taken away from them.
