He says that much of this difficulty can be attributed to professors and the way that writing is taught to students, especially individuals who are newly entering the college setting (11). According to Bartholomae, students struggle with adapting to academic discourse and using the commonplaces of the discourse because they must be able to place themselves within the discourse rather than just imitating it, which is a hard thing to learn and an even harder thing to put into practice when most students have no previous experience with the discourse of academics
However many students want to be given the freedom to decide which classes to attend. Most colleges and universities give professors the authority to set their own attendance rules. On other hand some argue that mandatory composition should not be required, as text books are enough of knowledge and information can prepare them salves without any help from professors. Writing is not just for English major. Taking English course can prepare the students to write successful papers throughout student’s university career.
These tests can easily comprise all of the basic skills taught in elementary and secondary schools. There is a clearer, more basic, outline of the skills that should be taught in the elementary and secondary levels of school as opposed to collegiate courses that can vary based on the type of school and/or trade you choose to study. Even then standardized tests are also widely used to gain acceptance into and graduate from these colleges and universities. If tests were not effective, why would the majority of colleges in this country require them? Since all students in a school are taking the same test, with respect to grade level, standardized tests provide an accurate comparison across groups.
One of the pros of these types of tests is that the teachers and schools are held accountable for students learning. One of the greatest benefits of these tests is that teachers are responsible for teaching the information to the students that is required on these tests. Another pro for these tests is that students from various schools, districts and states can be compared with each other. This is the main reason the Common Core State Standards were adopted. These standards allow for a more accurate comparison between the states.
Most of the things I've done well in this class. One of the things I've done well is to do all my assignments. I can say that it helped me a lot to get a good grade in this class for this semester. Also I have done my reading and writing tasks for myself and tried to do everything right on my own. In conclusion, do what the teacher assigned me really helped me to get a good grade.
In speaking to other ELL students whose home language is different, ELL students, use English but due to the students’ limitations in their English proficiency, they expose each other to more broken English I will value the instructional power of a word wall by frequently utilizing, maintaining, and updating it.All too often, secondary educators miss important opportunities to build the literacy skills of all students. This is especially true in
488). O`malley explains that students should be given test frequently to allow the teachers to give their students feed back in where their grades stand in the class and to discipline them into studying on a daily basis. The article also mentions that some professors are usually against more testing because it would be time consuming for them to prepare the exams then grade them. However, this issue can be solved by having teaching assistants or by grading multiple-choice exams by scantron machines. In conclusion, O’Malley strongly suggests that professors should give students
Final exams are a time of stress for students to worry about if they can recall all the lessons that their professors have went over within that semester. Students who are scarcely passing any of their classes need their final exams to be passing grades, so they tend to study a little harder. Finals also allow students to see how all the lessons they have learned connect through small facts. Identifying and understanding thoroughly everything the professor particularly emphasizes in class can be a hard and tough experience when preparing to study for finals. In Joy Alonso’s “Two Cheers for Examination “she uses examinations to examine the purposes and useless of exams in two and four year colleges to appear to students and teachers.
Foreign Students have language difficulties in their classes Even though many foreign students can pass an English proficiency test to get into the academic because English is the international language, they have language difficulties to integrate themselves into the classroom and college community. Since English is the second language for them, most of the foreign students are not familiar to speak English fluently. Moreover, they have limited time to learn English in class, and they don’t have enough encouragement to practice English outside of the class. As an effect, the international students have difficulties to communicate in English in their college career. Therefore, the best way to overcome the language difficulties is forcing the students to speak only English in the class room, and joining college activities and conversation club to interact and practice with other English language learners and native speakers.
The second TESOL goal is for the ELLs to use English to achieve academically in all content areas. The last TESOL goal is to use English in socially culturally appropriate ways. Even though the standards that TESOL uses are extremely helpful, they still don’t give teachers enough information they need to make sure that ELLs can achieve high standards in most content areas. .
