Davis 1 Tonya Davis ENG 112 Essay #2-- Evaluation Are Standardized test sufficient or irrelevant ? Blaine R. Worthen and Vicki Spandel’s article “Putting Standardized Testing Debate in Perspective” and Warwick Mansell’s analytical article “English Debate Value of Testing” both appearing on the ProCon.org. Neither of the articles have known dates, but with that being said every topic explained in the articles are still relevant to today. All three of the authors are well experienced enough to have more then valid opinions and to comment on the subject according to the titles in which the withhold: Blain R. The author states “students take school-leaving exams designed to help employer, universities, and colleges select canidates for jobs and future studies” (pg 95). Stating that standardized testing is a good placement method for students graduating and beginning their lives in the work field. Mansell also makes a valid point about the school systems in the United States. The “No child left behind” act comes into play everywhere in the country making it so that every child/student has an opportunitiy to succeed and better themselves, rather then leaving those students behind causing drop out rates to increase. Although I do believe that Worthen and Spandel make points that can be supported by live evidence. I feel that “Putting the Standardized Test Debate in Perspective” gives examples that can be proven and related to, allowing me to agree with the negatives of standardized testing methods. Davis 4 The standardized test used in school systems acquire their pros and cons, which may cause issues throughout the world. Being that both the pros and cons can be supported heavily, it is difficult to determine whether the method is sufficient or irrelevant. Agreeing with the negatives of norm-referenced testing I could not go on to say that my opinion could not be altered, with saying that during my comparisons I have made between the two articles I will continue to agree wit the points proven in Blaine R.
