Spatial Communication Spatial communication is a nonverbal element that affects people every day. It is the way in which humans can converse with each other and interact, according to where they are located from each other physically, also called proxemics. In this picture, it shows four examples of spatial communication. The first being an intimate relationship, there might not be as much space between them (18 inches) for they are comfortable enough to be close to each other. It is usually the people who are emotionally close to you that you allow entering the zone. For personal relationship, the space between two people is about a handshake away. It is the distance you would stand from each other if you were in a friendly gathering, or with good friends and family members. The next example is social relationship. The distance away from each other is most likely to be about 2 arm lengths away and you would allow this to happen if you don’t really know the person quite well, such as reserved acquaintances. Public relationship is the last example of spatial communication. It extends from 12 to 25 feet. This is usually the distance that makes you the most comfortable when addressing a group or public speaking. Everyone has that personal bubble that they are comfortable with. However, it is different for every culture and can be misinterpreted. The distance of space in the United States is different in Europe, nearly halved. So in some situations it might seem one person is being too distant and cold when that is not their intention. They don’t need as much personal space. The French emphasize on outside and public space. Asians place higher focus on functional space. There are a few theories about space. One is protection theory which means that you maintain spatial distance to protect yourself; equilibrium theory which means that you regulate the distance
