President Roosevelt used Pathos and Logos to attract the nation to the idea that if we did not act swiftly with force we would get attacked again and many more innocent lives would be taken. Roosevelt used the fact that Japan attacked not only Midway, but also Hong Kong, Guam, Philippine Islands and Wake Island along with attacks on American ships between San Francisco and Honolulu. The attack of this nature is the showing of unethical behavior that had to be stopped. This speech was given by Franklin D. Roosevelt on 8 December 1941 to the Senate, House and the citizens of America. This speech was given to the people by Roosevelt to show that he had declared a state of war, due to the actions of the Empire of Japan.
Spanish-American war * In Cuba, then a Spanish colony, angry nationalists known as the insurrectos began a revolt against the ruling Spanish colonial regime. When Spain sent in General "Butcher" Weyler to stabilize the situation in Cuba, he put much of the population in concentration camps. The US, which had many businessmen with investment interests in Cuba, became concerned. * In 1898, the US dispatched the USS Maine on a "friendly" mission to Cuba. The ship was to wait, ready to rescue US citizens who might be endangered by the conflict in Cuba.
In February 1989 those who were seeking intervention got a big opportunity as the warship, the USS Maine, was blown up whilst stationed on the harbour of Havana. All the evidence weighs up to the fact that the ship was blown up by an internal explosion but the USA used this event and were convinced that the Spanish wanted to go to war with America. This was a huge factor and the big final push to America which is why they declared war on Spain alongside other influences. The media at the time which was The ‘Yellow press’ a newspaper owned by William Randolph Hearst was thought to be one of the main causes of the Spanish
Elizabeth the Golden Age is a Modern film based on the Spanish Armada. It is a useful source because it gives us the main key aspects of the Spanish armada, such as the huge storm known as the great gale and how the message that the armada was approaching was sent by lighting fires in the beacons. It shows us how the Spanish had an extremely strong crescent formation which held them in the lead at first and how the British broke it by using big fire ships filled with explosives and tar. It also shows us how Elizabeth felt about the invasion as in one of the scenes it shows her worried and distressed about it. Another reason why this source is useful is because it tells us who the main people were who were involved and some of the reasons why it was caused and how some people felt about it.
The war that erupted in 1898 between the United States and Spain was preceded by three years of fighting by Cuban revolutionaries to gain independence from Spanish colonial rule. From 1895–1898, the violent conflict in Cuba captured the attention of Americans because of the economic and political instability that it produced in a region within such close geographical proximity to the United States. The long-held U.S. interest in ridding the Western Hemisphere of European colonial powers and American public outrage over brutal Spanish tactics created much sympathy for the Cuban revolutionaries. By early 1898, tensions between the United States and Spain had been mounting for months. After the U.S. battleship Maine
The U.S is not justified in annexing the Philippines and fighting a war to keep it because it was just a chance to exploit people and land to earn power and prestige. On April 25, the United States declared war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship U.S.S. Maine in Havana harbor sent by President McKinley to protect U.S citizens. Cuba was the first to initiate its own struggle for independence. Spain used ruthless brutal tactics to bring down the revolt where the U.S intervened due to sympathy for Cuban rebels.
I will be comparing the surprise attacks of Pearl Harbor and 9/11. These two attacks caused major damage to America’s home lands. The attacks are similar because both happened without warning, but there somewhat different also. For example, 9/11 was to scare America and Pearl Harbor was a strategic attack. Both I think backfired somewhat because they caused America to come together and fight the enemy.
Media coverage of the murder trial of Nancy Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman was massive; the label “Trial of the Century” was slammed on newspapers and magazines to boost sales. This trial weaved its way so deeply into pop culture and received overly extensive media coverage because O.J. Simpson was famous. Does that make this act of violence any more inhumane? Does the publicity affect the results, and does that make the unexpected results more outrageous?
One event that created a good platform and story for Yellow Journalism was the maine. This started a motive for revenge. The Maine was sent to Havana to protect American Property. Mysteriously the ship exploded killing 260 men. There was no explanation but this angered American casuring them to want to go to war.
Allan Adderley 3/9/2015 | | The Tribune | Cuba Under Attack | | Spanish-American War! Letter to the Editor of The tribuneI am more than please to acknowledge President William McKinley strategic plan to help Cuba against Spain. President McKinley made sure that Cuba was protected from any raids, ensured the safety of the people and made sure there was a stable government to operate Cuba. As a result, Cuba gain their independence. Despite the bloodshed that 100,000 people were killed made me sick to my stomach and can’t imagine how many bodies were scattered on that island.
