Through yellow Journalism and anti-Spanish propaganda Hearst was able to upset the America public, and put the United States against Spain. Revolts against Spain had been occurring in Cuba for Some time. Then February 15th 1898 the USS Maine mysteriously sank in Havana harbor. This was all the America public needed.

Cuba, a Spanish colony, had been in rebellion since 1895. The brutal Spanish response turned American sympathies to the Cuban insurgents. The US Battleship Maine arrived in Havanna Harbor in January 1898 with a dual mission to protect American interests and present the Spanish with a show of force. At 9:40 PM on the evening of February 15, an explosion ripped the forward hull quickly sending the ship to the bottom of the harbor, killing two hundred sixty-six of the 345 crew members. Investigations started immediately.
In the mid 19th century tension between the Spaniards and Puerto Ricans resulted in a massive uprising when Spain failed to conciliate the growing displeasure of its citizens. Spain involved itself in various issues all throughout Latin America. War in Peru and Chile, slave riots in Cuba, and loss of control in the Dominican Republic left the government of Spain in desperate need of financial support. As a result of their financial troubles the Spanish government imposed taxes on many of the imported and exported goods in Puerto Rico and Cuba. Of coarse, the taxes imposed only infuriated the Cubans and Puerto Ricans, turning their anger into violence.

The illegal imposition of rules over their trade and production, commonly known as the Navigation Acts, which have been pressed on them for over a century and made worse by the Sugar Act and Townshend Acts was controlled once the Declaration of Independence was written and signed. Furthermore, the colonists were being deprived in many cases. The Boston Massacre was when a mob of 50 colonists gathered to protest against the officials. As fists and clubs began flying a soldier dropped dead, this forced the soldiers to fire, killing five civilians and wounding six.
