Advertising: Is it Helpful or Harmful?

Every day we see many advertisements while watching TV. They often exert a subtle influence on our purchasing preference gradually. However, such phenomenon cannot be noticed immediately when we are buying some stuff in a supermarket, but it is the truth that after coming home, we always find something useless had been brought without notification. Obviously it is the advertisements that encourage us to do so. Probably the most persuasive argument is that earning profit by advertising is the aim of almost all the manufacturers. They never care whether customers really need their products. What they pay attention to is to make the advertisement more attractive to a great majority of people, so that customers may buy their products without a second thought. Take myself as an example. When I go to a supermarket, watching thousands of products placing on the shelves, I always could not help purchasing them. I do not understand why I often have such behavior, but I am certain it is related to the impact of the advertisement because all the products I tried to buy were those I had seen on television, though they might not be useful to me at all. Furthermore, advertisements also make an attempt to change customers’ purchasing preference. Since the same ads are always shown on TV between the same intervals, it is hard for anyone to forget the product. Even if you might assume the products are of no use in your life when you see the advertisement, you are still buying them only because you ‘like’ it! Every time I feel curious about myself after buying something I completely have no idea how to use it. However, I realize that my preference had been changed gradually after the new ads coming out.
