These people have stomas and now have a huge hole in their throat. This commercial is targeting smokers and potential smokers as well. This is made clear by looking at their website where the CDC states, “The Tips from Former Smokers campaign features real people suffering as a result of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke. Their compelling stories send a powerful message: Quit smoking now. Or better yet — don’t start” (Tips From Former Smokers).
Junior believes it has to do with depression, when he says, “I suppose he is depressed” and “I suppose the whole family is depressed” (40). He realizes that when he says, “we all look for ways to make the pain go away” (107). Some people that suffer from depression lock themselves in either the basement or “run away to get drunk” (150), like his sister and father. According to Junior everyone is depressed in the Rez, that is the reason why so many Indians become alcoholics, to flush away their pain. Junior's father “drinks his pain away” (107).
There is evidence saying marijuana is very harmful to the body and there is also research that says it only harms the lungs, as done with the inhalation of any kind of smoke. In the 1930's marijuana was thought of as the “dreaded assassin of the youth”, sending them into a troublesome life of crime and despair. Later in the1960's people thought of smoking marijuana as a harmful “giggle” that did no harm. Then, in the 1980's society went back to the “assassin of the youth”
Smokeless tobacco, also known as spit, snuff or chew, can have absolutely devastating results on the chewer. Some people use smokeless tobacco as an alternative to cigarettes. It is a misconception that chew tobacco is less hazardous to your health than cigarettes or cigars. The dangers of chewing tobacco are just as serious as smoking tobacco. It still contains nicotine and holds other dangerous chemicals, including 28 carcinogens (Mayo).
High school and college students who are regular users of marijuana find themselves to be struggling with inner turmoil; feeling depressed, scared, and often suffers from very low self-esteem. To a frequent user, smoking pot leads to judgment, logical thinking, and memory impairment. Smoking marijuana is proven to have many negative psychological and personality effects on those who choose to smoke it. One many argue that marijuana has a positive attributes to the medical field; this may be true. What about the long term effects of the addiction?
Any drug one uses has a high potential of becoming addict status. Its how one decides to use the drug that dictates if he or she will become an addict. If one were to observe the trends of drugs he or she would see that the effects drugs have vary. According to GetGoing (2011) marijuana is a highly addictive drug but with few ill effects. Marijuana may cause panic and stress attacks in extreme cases but helps ones gain back loss of appetite, and can dull pain from radiation treatments (GetGoing, 2011).
When Lane says, “ Recreational use is not the smartest thing” I absolutely agree. A lot of adolescents start smoking marijuana because they are peer pressured. The more they do it, the more they seem to want to keep doing it to “fit in”. It seems that the earlier someone is to start smoking marijuana the more decided they are about legalizing it. Legalizing marijuana would make our government look terrible; because marijuana is a drug that most people use to “escape” or just because they like the feeling.
My cousin has shamed many of us by stealing, lying, prostituting, and many other acts I care not to share. So, this topic has influenced me to research and find information that can help individuals such as my cousin. A research study called the Substance Abuse Policy Research Program (SAPRP) is to fund substance abuse policy research that can help reduce the harm caused by the use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs in the United States. The morbidity and mortality from tobacco use, alcohol abuse, and other drugs are staggering, as are the direct and indirect costs to society. These costs include violence, crime, overburdened service systems, reduced productivity, and higher health care
Hypnosis and Smoking Cessation The act of smoking cigarette is not only a key preventable risk factor of diseases, but a significant cause of undue mortality. Smoking is associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, vascular disease, cancer and death of smokers. A large percentage of people who engage in smoking habits are conscious of the risks that the habit poses their lives, and only a small number of current smokers are reluctant to stop the act; however, majority of smokers may not be successful in their attempt to cease smoking on their own. Although, hypnotherapy is a plausible option for smoking cessation, most research findings based on hypnotherapy as a way of ceasing to smoke, have been inconsistent on its randomization.
Many people believe drugs are what have brought our society to become so corrupt. I used to think this too, however, I was so wrong about them. They’re great! They may be somewhat expensive, but hey that’s okay. I know as long as I’m addicted to them the way I am, I could live forever.
