People that use tanning beds on a regular bases are more likely to develop skin cancer. Every year more than a thousand people are diagnosed with skin cancer due to the exposure to the UV rays from tanning beds. When skin cancer is found quickly, it can be successfully treated. The bad news is that not many people will catch it until it is to late, because they only start to take notice when there have been changes in skin’s texture and appearance which are the symptoms of skin cancer in advanced stage. “There is no question that this exposure causes thousands of skin cancer deaths a year,” says the president of the Society of Melanoma Research - David E. Fisher.
With that being said, in reference to the first paragraphs statement alluding to weather skin cancer is an inherited gene mutation or if it is due to exposure to the UV light. Let’s take a closer look to make it clearer; most fair skin, light hair, freckled, and light eyed people have a higher risk of developing skin cancer. However they HAVE to be exposed to sun light in order for it to happen. On the opposite side of that a darker skinned, darker hair and dark eyed person may not be as susceptible to skin cancer but if they are exposed for long enough and often enough they too can get skin cancer. In addition to them getting skin cancer it is more “likely” that they will get it in an area that isn’t exposed to the sun as often, i.e.
Colon Cancer Risk Assessment Steven L. McClain SCI/162 December 17, 2011 Jessica Broome Colon Cancer Risk Assessment Colon cancer also known as colorectal cancer is cancer of large intestine, which is the lower part of the digestive system. Colon cancer usually begins as small non-cancerous bumps (adenomatous polyps) and over time can become cancerous. According to the Center for Disease Control (2010)“Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and the third most common cancer in men and in women.” Also the Center for Disease Control states that “the risk of getting colorectal cancer increases with age and is greater in men than in women.” (Center for Disease Control, 2010). The following information was retrieved from the Mayo Clinic Some signs of colon cancer are: • A change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation. • Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool.
The first is squamous cell, which accounts for an outstanding 80-90% of all cervical cancer cases. Then there are adenocarcinomas, which accounts for a 10-20% of the cervical cancer cases (Shinn, 2004, p38). Cervical cancer is highly treatable if caught at an early stage. “But once cancer spreads to the lymphatic system or parametrial tissues adjacent to the cervix, treating it successfully becomes more difficult” (Shinn, 2004, p. 38). Sexual exposure to the sexually transmitted infection HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is one of the most common causes of cervical cancer.
Skin cancer that forms in squamous cells is called squamos cell carcinoma. Skin cancer that forms in neuroendocrine cells is called neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin. The most common skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Over one million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every year.
Jenevie Kalvarini Ryan Gallagher Chemistry H 7/15/13 In the article “Sniffing for cancer” by Stephen Ornes he states there’s a new surgical tool that offers surgeons speedier diagnosis of tissues that are cancerous. This new surgical tool is called the “iKnife”. As of now the same procedure can be done by a human but it can take up to thirty minutes, on the other hand it can be accomplished by iKnife in just three seconds. A tool like an iKnife can prevent leaving any diseased cells behind and eliminating chances of causing a new tumor which consequently, will lead the disease to spread. Surgeons usually use electric currents to get rid of these diseased cells instead of using a sharp blade to cut them out.
Childhood sun exposure may also play an important part in the development of these cancers later in adult life, where children play outside for hours in the summer. (http://www.ccohs.ca) Family history has been researched, and research shows a small percentage of melanoma cases are caused by family factors. In families that many generations have multiple melanoma cases are at higher risk. The major hereditary melanoma gene is labeled, CDKN2A, and is found to be mutated. (http://www.cancer.net) There are two basic types of genetic mutations: acquired and germ line.
Cancer can be a fast developing disease, it is also extremely fatal if not diagnosed in time and not treated properly. Nowadays in Hong Kong the majority of the population can receive an accurate screening and effective treatment in local hospital. In Hong Kong, the Hospital Authority (from here on known as HA) hospitals offers a full set of diagnostic tests/screening and treatments. Nasopharyngeal Cancer is the most common cancer in Hong Kong, the diagnosis and the treatment of this cancer and other common cancers will be offered in stages. First of all the diagnosis, thanks to many research projects, we now have a very accurate cancer marker for the detection of Nasopharyngeal Cancer.
There are two vaccines (Gardisil and Cervaix) that are given to year 8 girls to prevent HPV. “This vaccine is said to save an estimate of 400 women each year [1].” A pathogen is a biological agent that causes diseases or illness to its host A cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph system. Cancer is a problem to body because it can spread and then takes over parts of the body that carries out essential functions A vaccine protects your body from specific diseases that make you become very ill, disabled or even kill you. The way the HPV vaccine works is by using an inactive form of the virus.
Cancer, however, would be reduced by implementing the preventive measures of the health care people suffering from the disease could also afford to treat it without going broke. Despite much political bickering, the health care gives a much positive outlook for cancer and opening the door for more people who were otherwise condemned to die from cancer to access insurance coverage. Cancer is inarguably one of the most distressing diseases that could impact people. Including all the health problems, cancer affect a lot of people in the world, it takes a toll on peoples lives physically, emotionally and financially. The patient protection and affordable care act also known as the health benefits is a health bill signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2013.
