This scene would be intense to watch as the mood suddenly shifts from love to hate. Shakespeare also uses contrast through Romeos character. At the beginning of the scene Romeo is calm, refusing to fight Tybalt and trying to prevent any fighting. ‘Put thy rapier up.’ After the death of Mercutio Romeo changes. He is now angry with Tybalt and wants revenge.
This, hopefully would have resulted in him not killing Tybalt. People could argue that Romeo only killed Tybalt simply because of his bad temper. A reason to support the view stating Romeo is fortunes fool and this bad act was destined to happen is the fact that Romeo is a Montague and Tybalt is a Capulet. This shows us that Romeo was born into bad luck, as both the families had always been rivals. Romeo and Tybalt are unable to prevent being born into these families, stating Romeo and Tybalt only fought considering that they were both born into families which had forever been enemies making Romeo bound to have killed Tybalt, or death could have easily occurred the other way round.
When Abram asks Sampson if he bit his tongue at him, he says “No sir, i did not bite my tongue at you but I did bite my tongue, sir.” This is shown in a manner, which is suggesting the obvious that it’s a lie, which is provoking Abram to start conflict. Before long, the fight between the two is started. This is when we meet Tybalt and Benvolio, two contrasting characters. Benvolio tries to separate the fight between Abram and Sampson. He says “Part fools!
Down with the Montagues!”(Page 11). Both groups are constantly hostile to each other, and continue fighting simply because it is all they have ever known. But conflict occurs when the rules are broken between this ongoing feud when two star-crossed lovers finally meet. Romeo shares a bond with his best friend Benvolio, a nephew to Montague and a cousin and friend to Romeo. Benvolio attempts to stop the fight between the servants at the beginning of the play.
Romeo uses many contradiction of love, pairs such as feather and lead. These are oxymorons. Romeo’s emotions start to control his life and dictate the actions and the path ways of Romeo’s life. The dramatic effect keeps reminding the audience that his love stricken state is ‘inside out’. His contradictory feelings of his mind show that in his head, things are confused.
Romeo doesn’t want any trouble with Tybalt. He tells Mercutio to go, and to stop teasing Tybalt, as he knows that Tybalt, being an expert swordsman, will fight Mercutio to the death, with Tybalt defeating Mercutio: “Draw Benvolio…Hold Tybalt. Good Mercutio.” Sct 3 Scene 1 Line 87-91. This shows Romeo is protective over his friends. With Mercutio now dead, as a result of Tybalt’s thrust under Romeo’s arm, Romeo is very annoyed and wants to take
The reason for this is to make it like what people would do in modern times. Another difference is the scene changes. In the Zefferelli version, Tybalt, Romeo, and Mercutio are taunting each other and playing around. After Tybalt stabs Mercutio he didn’t think he actually hurt him and everyone thought he was just playing around and faking an injury to make fun of Tybalt. In the modern version, Mercutio and Romeo are clearly afraid of Tybalt.
As we progress through his soliloquys in the play we see changes in Hamlet’s emotions and feelings towards what he eventually wants to do. By the third soliloquy we have found out about Hamlet’s fathers ghost and that Claudius was the one who killed him. Hamlet is angered by this and assures that he will only think of getting revenge on Claudius. Later he realizes that he should stop procrastinating and hurry up and avenge his father, but he doesn’t have the courage to do it. Hamlet also expresses the possibilities that the ghost could have been the devil.
How does Shakespeare Portray conflict in Romeo and Juliet? Conflict is the colliding between two or more things that do not agree with each other. There can be conflict between different things such as, physical conflict which is the most obvious. A less obvious example is the conflict William Shakespeare portrays in his play Romeo and Juliet. He uses conflict in so much detail that one would only have to look at the play; the length of the lines would stand out.
Upon further investigation, Friar Lawrence should receive the blame. Admittedly, Tybalt has a large influence on Romeo and Juliet’s death, because he caused the fight. Romeo tried to avoid it, but Mercutio joined in and started the fight and later Tybalt killed Mercutio. Romeo got mad and killed Tybalt and got exiled from Verona. However, Friar Lawrence is more responsible than Tybalt for the deaths of our “star cross’d lovers” because he allowed Romeo and Juliet marry and it caused Romeo to avoid the fight at first with Tybalt, than later tried to stop the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio and caused Mercutio to get killed by Tybalt.
