Sean Reilley Period 3 3-8-12 A Comparison of Two Friends In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there are many similarities and differences between multiple characters. An example of one of these connections could be between the two characters Romeo and Mercutio. They share a brotherly or family love for each other and have many similarities and differences between each other. Some of these similarities and differences could be known as immaturity, impatience, and love or romance. These will also be the topics being compared in this paper. While Romeo is always being romantic and loving, Mercutio is always saying how love might be useless and that love should be treated harshly. For instance, Romeo was talking to the Friar in his cell after the Friar Lawrence had told that the Prince had banished him for killing Tybalt, Romeo had reacted by telling him “Yet “banished” Hang up philosophy” (III.iii.57). This shows Romeo is being immature because when he found out that he had been banished for killing Tybalt he started saying that philosophy should just be taken out of mind when dealing with his banishment, even though he was allowed to live and he could still see Juliet if he was stealthy enough. Similarly, Mercutio is always being immaturity as well. One example of this could be when he was talking to Tybalt in the streets of Verona and he said to Tybalt “Make it a word and a blow” even though Tybalt did not want to fight (III.i.38). Romeo shows impatience when he was fighting Tybalt after Mercutio had died in the streets of Verona and he told him “Either thou or I or both must go with him” (III.i.125). This shows Romeos impatience because even after his friend had died, he took no time in mourning for his death but instead went straight back to Tybalt for revenge. Similarly, Mercutio is also always being impatient. One example of his impatience could be when he told Tybalt in the streets of Verona “Here’s my fiddlestick, here’s that shall make you dance” (III.i.45-46). Mercutio is saying that this is my sword and this is that which will cause you to dance around to avoid the edge of his blade. This shows his impatience because even though Tybalt was looking to find Romeo and was saying that he did not want to fight Tybalt, Mercutio was still trying to fight him and at the end of the fight he ended up dead. Therefore, when it comes to impatience, Romeo and Mercutio should be the first characters you look at in this play. In the end, Romeo and Mercutio are similar and different in many ways. As I said before some examples of the differences and similarities between them could be impatience, immaturity and romance or love. Therefore, in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare there are many similarities and differences between multiple characters. One great example of contrast between the characters
